4 day school week?

Perhaps but some schools are simply out of $$$. The school where I live dosent have money to pay substitutes anymore since they have had so many subs due to the lack of teachers.
There are quite a few towns in rural Idaho that use the 4 day schedule. A lot of the counties are largely federal land, so the tax base is fairly small. Without timber sales receipts, rural schools and county road departments are strapped.

Yup I can see that as a possible problem. Much of that is people leaving education because the teachers and staff no longer have the power to discipline kids.

That is absolutely one of the most common reasons people leave education or at least leave the classroom for higher paying office jobs in education.

I’ll also add that where I live, you can get a basic Joe job that pays as much as some teachers make. You’d have less responsibility as much or more money and wouldn’t have to babysit.

Yups so they then bumped up the pay for teachers and TA's. In order to entice them. But have to decrease the work week to keep them. What need need to do is go back to accountability.

I don’t know man. Where I live, a teacher straight out of college makes 49k a year. You can work at the power plant for 35.00/hour with less education and better benefits.

I’d also add that according to the NEA (the largest educational union in the country) teacher happiness and productivity has gone up in states that increased teacher salaries by a meaningful amount.

As far as teaching assistants, those are usually people who have been fired from the grocery store and shouldn’t be in the schools to begin with.

Yeah it’s insane isn’t it?

Good luck ever owning a home or getting ahead in life off 37k
The part that is insane is that they scratch their heads wondering why they can’t fill those positions or when they do, the person leaves after about a year.

I agree and the same exact thing happens in schools. The pay is low, the responsibilities are increasing while admin support goes down. And retirement benefits disappear

Jobs are unfilled, budgets are eaten up with sub pay and recruitment activities. Teachers are given extra students to make up for the lack of people working in the school which causes more people to quit.

Schools wonder why people don’t want to teach.

Additionally lots of school budget is taken away if it goes unused so if teaching positions aren’t filled, in some cases schools lose that funding as well, the next year they have the same workload with an even lower budget.

4 full days and a 135pm dismissal on Fridays. It's pretty awesome. This is in WY.

Apparently my school district has done this for quite a long time. The disadvantage for the kids is they have a harder time adjusting to a five day work week.

That’s not a disadvantage.
5 day school came about at the advent of the 5 day workweek as a way to train people to work 8-5 5 days a week.
Both are antiquated ideas that aren’t reflective of todays work environment

Why do you think it’s too early? Off the top of my head I can’t think of a positive to start school later.

There is a fair bit of research that suggests many kids’ academic performance suffers due to sleep deficit. 8 hours often isn’t enough. Starting school an hour later seems to be a more effective solution than having kids go to bed an hour earlier.

Most kids will simply stay up an extra hour if school starts an hour later so I really doubt late starts will result in better rested students.

I really support 4-day school week. If possibly, 3-day school is enough. At the end of the day what really counts is how to read and write, and be able to do basic Grade 4/5 maths. Everything else is a matter of personal interest the child wants to pursue, IMO.
What you’re really implying is that minimum wage is good enough

Does anybody work in or your children attend a School district that has a four-day school week? The district my kids attend is exploring it. A few others in western Kansas have the four-day week already, most go 8 to 4 Monday-Thursday.
I’d be interested to hear what you think of it. Positive or negative
sort of,..
at my twins' (seniors) HS, if they're grades are at a good level, they get Monday's off.

I like it, as they have incentive., but do notice on their days off, not a lot of dad-approved activity going on (more screen time).

good luck!

Exactly. It’s discipline and time management. Two things that are extremely lacking anymore.

We can agree to disagree.
