Next weekend is opening day for deer for me , I just bought a new scope 4x14x44 ( eyes are crappy) from a 2x7x33
Only gun range is 25yard , was thinking 1inch -1,25 low @ 25 would be about right for 200y zero with 130gr .270win
Any thoughts on this ( except go to a 100y range because there isn’t one )

With the usual caveat that you should really shoot at a longer distance to verify that things are working here is my ballistic table with a 130 gr ttsx going 3008 fps.

It would suggest that you want to be about 0.6" low at 25 yards.

i'd hunt a different rifle before I hunted one that should probly be about sighted in close enough

I shot a 270 for years. Hand loaded 150 grain. My 25 yard zero was to be dead on, that would make it 2" high at 100 yds and dead on @ 200 yds.
This is how my uncle sighted in guns when I was a kid
A hole through a hole @ 25 , my other uncle was it goes to 2 inch high @ 100
Wish I had access to a 100 , but California moved to Texas and most 100 yard ranges have closed down

Sighting in at such short range adds importance to a couple things since the errors are getting magnified. One of those is sight height. When plugging in the info into a ballistics calculator, you have to enter the height of the scope reticle above the centerline of the bore. This typically doesn't have to be super accurate if you aren't shooting a long way but in a case like this where we are sighting in a such short range, its more important.

Here is an example of what I'm referring to. I used a G1 BC of 0.4 for a general 130gr 270 bullet and a muzzle velocity of 2950fps. Default sight height of 1.5" gave a result of 0.31" low at 25yds for a 200yd zero. 1.5in sight height.jpg

If the sight height is actually 1.75" that make the 25yd impact 0.53" low for a 200yd zero. 1.75in sight height.jpg

Take some time and measure the sight height and plug it into any ballistics calculator to see where you need to be hitting at 25yds to be zeroed at 200yds. Be aware that you need to shoot several shots and take the average impact point. Being off by 0.1" at 25 yards could change your zero distance by 20 yards or more.

I don't have anything to add here other than this sure makes me thankful for where I live! I've never been to a gun range in my life and walk 20' from my reloading bench to shoot.

Why do the longer ranges close down? Housing?

Indoor range maybe?

I'm more curious why we are waiting a week before season to sight in a rifle?
I didn’t wait, I was shooting two different guns and shot terrible with the.270
Because my eyesight couldn’t see the small target
My 4x14 scope on the .308 I could see the target better
Getting old sux

As far as no 100yard range our town went from 3000 people to 25,000 in 15 years
So when houses are built around the range they become indoor 25 or suburbs

yup
It’s a gift rifle ( M70 pre64 ) from the guy who owns the property and invited me to come over and hunt, and I don’t want to offend him
I will find a place to shoot before Friday, this weekend is important to him

No way to truly know without actually shooting it. I wouldn’t take it hunting until I had it confirmed

That makes more sense now.

Get er on at 25. Then friday when you get there verify your 100 and spill some blood on saturday?

That’s not the problem, most of those ranges are private or allow tactical warriors, that are blasting 30 rounds with a muzzle break next to your head
Which is uncomfortable and unnervingView attachment 783417
Most private ranges do daily fee use, and the ones I go to tend to have separate bays for tactical-Timmy stuff or do not allow full auto fire/semiauto mag dumps. I’m sure you can find a range within a reasonable distance that will work for you. You call them up and ask about fees/what’s allowed/what’s not etc.

I think that's very prudent.

Hornady has a free ballistic calculator - I think this duplicates factory loads, but the bore to scope distance for your gun will be slightly different.
