270 to a 280ai

I have my grandpa's old savage 110 in 270win. Bullet selection is starting to get better for .277. But this gun doesn't shoot 150gr the way I like. Thought about rebarreling it to a faster twist 270 and longer throat to get around 3000fps. But the ole 280ai does it all and the books say the 280ai is only 60-100fps slower than a 7rem mag. I love the 7mm but don't wanna change bolt faces. Thoughts?

Is finding ammo an issue? Cant say Ive ever seen a box of 280ai on a store shelf. Maybe a big cabelas or something in the rockies when traveling, but not even sure of that.

I did it. Make sure it’s a good gunsmith. Taken grizzly, moose and wolf with it.
Good luck with Accubonds and Hammer bullets @160 grains. Recoil is very manageable. I started with a Tikka.

Was hoping to do it in my basement. Have done 2 22-250 barrels on savages. Savage prefits work well, just heard the 280ai can be finicky with different reamers and such. I guess I should pick the brain of a local gunsmith.

Just get a SAAMI spec reamer and screw that puppy onto your Savage.

I load the 168 Berger VLD in a buddy’s rifle.
