I went 8 twist because according to twist rate calculators, the 170 would be marginally stable at the elevation and temps that I shoot. Also, an 8 twist barrel was easier to find than 9 twist. Interestingly the Hornady 150 SST shot horrible at longer ranges in most 10 twist barrels. Math says they are borderline stable with a 10 twist, but they shoot great out of the 8 twist.

I see no downside to using a faster twist barrel as long as it’s not way outside the normal margins. Think ARs, I’ve had several 7 twist barrels shoot 40 and 50 grain bullets just fine. Now a 7 twist .22-250 shooting 40 grain bullets does tend to make bullets come apart.

Interesting topic and thank you for posting. Anybody ever built a .270-08? I'd never heard of it before reading an article in Field and Stream the other day. With all the love out there for the 7mm-08, I'm surprised more guys haven't built out the 270-08, especially with the new bullets and fast twist barrels.

Some benefits include:
Long, skinny, high BC bullets
Short action
Less recoil than standard .270
Cheap and readily available brass

For that matter, and not to derail the thread, but why not a .25-08? NVM, just found article on the .25 Souper
The 270 Redding would have been the perfect version of a 270-308. Has a 30 degree shoulder and would have fit in nicely with today's modern case design.

My long term project is a fast twist .25-06 AI for many of the same reasons. The long skinny 135 grain Berger EOL have a BC of .65 and should be laser beams. I'm looking forward to tinkering once I can afford a new barrel and dies.
I’m anxious to hear about that once you get it done.

Fast twist 270 sounds great. Will do one eventually. I have 6.8W and a fast twist 270 wsm. Didn’t want to rebarrel one of my current 270s as I am quite happy with them but if ever shoot one out will go with faster twist. There are plenty of heavy 270 bullets these days for hunting. There may be more in other calibers but who cares. Berger has like 10 different 7mm bullets between 168-180 that are never in stock. Just use a 270/170 and simplify your life:) The 27-08 may be gaining some steam as well. Saw a couple articles on it recently. For ex

Because a 7mm-08 with 180gr ELD-M is better.

I “like” 270’s, but they aren’t there with bullets for them.
Roger that, I see they don't offer an ELDM in .270, only offer the ELDX in a 145. Interlok and SST at 150...
They came out with 134 ELDM in .257, so hopefully long and heavy .270 are in the future.

Always been a fan of the 270 W, safe has never been without one, probably killed more deer with my 270 than any other I have, never disappoints. I thought of another custom 270, if I do, I think I'll go 1:9 based on the feedback I've received from others. 3,000 FPS is cranking for 165s, most 270s shoot 130s at 3,050 FPS so you're really moving with 165s. The only thing stopping me is that I'd have to unpack my hand loading gear.

Thanks for sharing this build! Great performance!

Had it been called the 6.8 Jack O’Connor Cage Match Tactical Ram Blaster then everyone would want one!!

Actually both the 165 ABLR and the 150 SST are solid half minute loads.
Just shot a deer and recovered a 165. Ill post some pics soon.

First pic, bullet broke front shoulder
Second pic, bullet blew apart spine
Third pic, where bullet was found just under the hide.
Bullet went 3/4 way through the deer on a diagonal. I’ve actually made a shot like this before and the bullet exited. This was maybe a 50 yard shot.

Some pictures of 700 yard groups. These were shot from a bipod and I’m certain they would have been tighter if I could have been more steady. Either way, pretty darn good.

I built a 270 AI this spring and have been shooting it the past few months. 23” barrel is giving me up to 3025 with the 170 Berger. The accuracy load seems to be around 2970. Accuracy is slightly below 1/2 MOA out to 800 yards with a 6.4 lb rifle. This build has exceeded my expectations for velocity and it’s low recoil make it a joy to shoot compared to the 7 magnums.

Why neuter an 08 by loading .277 bullets in it? I couldn't do that to an already proven cartridge. But, then again, I don't like, and have never liked, 270s.

Better BCs and velocity which reduce long range drop and drift with added benefit of reduced recoil. The gains may not be significant enough to justify handloading, but why do we do anything with wildcats? It's fun and something different.

The same thing could be said about 7-08. The .308 was already a proven cartridge before the 7-08. ;)
