The way you describe elk, I don't understand how thousands of people kill them with wimpy little arrows flying 300 ft per second. Sounds like I need some anti tank rounds or something. What is your minimum cartridge for ethically killing an elk?

I can for certain with a 100 percent fact say not everyone can learn to drive a truck. Dealing with truck drivers every day for the last 20 years has proven that fact time and time again.

So you really don’t have an answer just an opinion . People act like elk are some kind of armor plated creature they die just like every thing else you put holes in the lungs or disconnect the central nervous system they die.
I didn’t say an 18 wheeler. (.300 Ultra Mag) A half ton grocery getter. Every country girl can handle that. If not she shouldn’t drive one. (Stick to deer hunting)

2 inch thick steel is hella heavy to move with out machinery
12x12x2 = 87lbs
🤣 That’s a fact! When I was 20 years old and just started setting chokers the old guys thought It’d be a riot to send me up to mountain with a 75 pound block! Imagine my disappointment when the Hook tender said it wasn’t the one he wanted and to take it back.

Post of the year so far. A Rem Core Lokt blew through 2 inch steel. Maybe someone poked most of the way through with a 6.5 Creed before you showed up. 🤣😂😜
Get a 25-06 or similar speed bullet and try it.

That's my recollection, but it's been a few years, it was perhaps a bit thinner than 2 inches, but not much maybe 1.5. The hole certainly narrowed from one side to the other, but it penetrated all the way through the gong. At the end of the day, you refuse to recognize the point, which is--that no decently constructed 25-caliber bullet will fail to penetrate elk bone.

Oh boy……Hopefully it was a Young and not a doggone Ropemaster! When I was hooking, I made sure the chaser never sent out a ropemaster! Glad to see another logger out there

Razor sharp broadheads kill differently than bullets. You should know that.
What kills an animal is blood loss. Period. Nothing else does unless you put one in the brain pan. Arrows are cut on contact only. Bullets create a larger, secondary wound due to the speed they travel and shock wave sent through surrounding tissue and organs.

A small fast bullet zips through steel that’s why there are fps limits at matches. A ballistic expert as your self should know that. You didn’t answer Ryan how much energy do you need to kill an elk?

When people lose elk to a big magnum it’s because elk are tough, when they lose elk to a 6.5, 25 or 6mm it’s because the cartridge is to small. It’s how the game is played…..
Either gun, they lose elk, deer, whatever to bad shots. A good shot and responsible follow-up means a recovered animal.

That was a long time ago and I only did it for a couple years. I cut trees for the power company now. Hopefully you guys still break in the greenhorns the same way. Never worked so hard since but It sure makes a man out of a boy real quick!

Yeah, bullets cause hydrostatic shock and secondary wound channels. They kill way more efficiently than broadheads.

I bow hunt with field points. If I do my part elk drop like a sack of hammers when you hit them where the spinal column enters the skull.

Taylor Knock Out Values.

And it uses the estimated energy for one shot kills on game.

It uses a recommended energy and a minimum energy for each animal.

On Elk it recommends 2000 ft/lbs and 1500ft/lbs as a minimum. this is at the Point of Impact.

Deer are 1200 ft/lbs and 1000 ft/lbs minimum.

These values are conservative but are a good place to start.

You could use less energy but the results would vary especially if shot placement was not
the best.””

i typically follow this rule of thumb, I like DRT because I hate tracking

Diesels, subarus, half tons… This reminds me of one of those engine discussions about “there is no replacement for displacement”. The problem with that argument is technological advances. Maybe 30 years ago without modern advances in bullet technology (or turbos/superchargers), the argument could be valid. But there is enough evidence on this forum alone to invalidate that thought process.

So any thing that has 1500 ftlbs at poi should be acceptable ?
