Being a shitty driver kinda like a shitty shot.

But what where does pea shooter stop and non per shooter start.
Simple! At the most you can accurately shoot. Anyone can learn to drive a truck and anyone can handle something more suited for the job than a 25-.06. If you can’t see over the dashboard sit on a phone book. (Muzzle brake)

I can for certain with a 100 percent fact say not everyone can learn to drive a truck. Dealing with truck drivers every day for the last 20 years has proven that fact time and time again.

So you really don’t have an answer just an opinion . People act like elk are some kind of armor plated creature they die just like every thing else you put holes in the lungs or disconnect the central nervous system they die.

I killed my first elk with a 25-06 factory load 100-grain Core-Lokt from 300 yards away. Elk was facing me, so I shot it dead center in the neck just below its bottom jaw. It didn't take a step and was dead instantly, because I had the confidence with that gun, at that distance, and after much practice to take the shot. I am confident that the same bullet, if placed behind the shoulder, which would have been laughably easy with that tack-driving rifle, would have also made a quick, clean kill.

Exactly right! Stopping is the problem. If you hit my truck (heavy bone) from behind the Subaru will stop dead. I’ll turn the radio down and say what was that? The truck (elk) will survive.

When I was in high school in the early 90s, my friend constructed a swinging gong target in high school shop. He used 2-inch steel for the gong. We shot it a bunch with 22s, had a blast and then he told me to shoot it, from 100 yards away, with my 25-06. The bullet made a nice neat hole through his 2-inch steel gong and that was the end of our fun that day. If a 100 grain Core-Lokt (not the best bullet in the world) can penetrate 2-inch steel, no elk bone is stopping it.

The only problems with the 25/06 are factory barrels with twists too slow for the newest high bc bullets, and crappy brass for reloading.

Here's some useful links pertinent to the subject at hand. Highlights include moose with 223 and giraffe with 6mm Remington. Have any magnum sized fellas been able to arouse one of these carcasses back to life? Or is it better to use logic and explain to them how they can't be dead yet because it wasn't a magnum?

There's actually a 25 cal thread out there as well.

I will never kill more elk with a single cartridge, than I did with a 25-05 when I was young. Shooting all of those elk with a 25-06 is the exact reason I use much larger rifles as an adult. The energy sucks for elk. It's a marginal cartridge, and most people damn well know it. You can drop one with a .243 to the heart... hell I've seen a bull killed with a .17rem right between the eyes. Allow a margin of error for a less than perfect shot by using more gun. Show some respect to the elk, which live in country where rests are imperfect, wind is a factor, and at altitudes that can make steady breathing difficult after a scramble. When you're out of breathe from scrambling over a rise, trying to nail a bull that's about to disappear.... (or staring at a trophy with a less than ideal angle).... you'll realize that the perfect shot isn't always the shot you get.

Every outfitter I hunt with I ask what caliber do you prefer? I most always hear magnum of some sort (7mm, 300). Many have a minimum caliber restriction, as do several states. Most outfitters have a policy that if you draw blood and don't recover your done. A marginal shot with a light caliber compared to magnum can be the difference between a kill or a lost animal. I get the fact that recoil can be difficult for some to handle but with a muzzle brake that can be mitigated. Elk are majestic animals and for me have my utmost respect as a game animal. That and the fact the are really good eating. Good luck fellow hunters and shoot straight with whatever caliber you choose.
As a guide if you show up to camp with a braked magnum it’s gonna be a long hunt for me. I will NEVER recommend a brake for people coming to hunt because it always ends in my eardrums getting absolutely abused. Brakes have a place but it makes it unsafe for anybody around you.

How many shots are your hunters taking/missing? I don’t like brakes either, but one shot is bearable, provided it’s not in my ear

You can also pull a trailer with a Subaru. 🤣

I never said you needed a 1 ton diesel. (Magnum)

But it’s much safe to go to a half ton pickup so you don’t wreck. (Unrecovered elk)

Yes you can pull a little utility trailer with a Subaru. (Deer)

But a horse trailer (elk) will run you over.

Even if you keep the Subaru between the lines (placement)

It just doesn’t have the horsepower (energy)

So now tell me that the pea shooter guys are marksmen and guys with bigger guns miss all the time. Don’t worry there are many of us who can keep a truck between the lines. Theres a tool for every job. Why put a screw in with a butter knife which we can all tell success stories about, when you could use a freaking screwdriver! Why???
I actually think a better analogy would be using a salad fork on your main course and a dinner fork for your salad. Everyone will tell you that’s bad table manners and may convince you that you are doing something wrong. But when you look at it without any noise you realize that they are both a fork and the only difference is the “conventional” wisdom that people will spout off about how it’s improper to use one or the other in a situation.

No one shot is not “bearable”. Every brake on the market that I am aware of will produce a peak decibel rating that causes irreversible hearing damage. This can be mitigated with ear pro but it is not always a possibility to get that in before a shot is taken

The way you describe elk, I don't understand how thousands of people kill them with wimpy little arrows flying 300 ft per second. Sounds like I need some anti tank rounds or something. What is your minimum cartridge for ethically killing an elk?

Im just gonna throw this out there cuz i never see this comparison. If we can shoot an elk with a stickbow and no one has ethics issues with it, why do argue about any rifle caliber? The right bullet out of almost any rifle is probably a better choice than a stick? (Note: im also an archery guy and have zero issues with any archery hunting) so long as the projectile hits vitals and leads to the necessary blood loss.

Post of the year so far. A Rem Core Lokt blew through 2 inch steel. Maybe someone poked most of the way through with a 6.5 Creed before you showed up. 🤣😂😜
