I’m guessing this is the barrel you bought from me? If so, these are the most applicable notes I could find. Varget would need to be quite compressed to get you to those velocities if it could at all.

Definately the smallest deer I have ever let someone shoot, but not sure if I will be able to get him out again this year.
My wife shot a button buck about that size. Yesterday we put a whole hind quarter on the traeger, and that was mighty fine eatin. She will eat like butter!

Some time those baby back ribs are just to good to pass upMy wife shot a button buck about that size. Yesterday we put a whole hind quarter on the traeger, and that was mighty fine eatin.
Took my 9 yr old grandson out yesterday afternoon, wrestling has taken over his Saturdays. He wanted to shoot anything, so when this little fawn slipped under the fence onto our property, we snuck up to 120 yards and he dropped her. She was broadside and he hit her in the back 1/3 of thr rib cage. Had a caliber size entrance and no exit. The bullet took a left turn and ended up in the stomach, so I didn't look for it. 77gr TMK at 2700 MV.

Kids had a damage hunt a few years ago that they each got 5 tags for antlerless and could use an unused general season deer tag for either sex. We ended up with 2 fawns that we left the front shoulders whole on. Seasoned them like a prime rib and smoke them for 2 hours then finished to 145⁰ in the oven. Even the shanks were good! Everything was soft and flavorful. Used the bones to make broth and make a killer beef and barley type soup, vegetable beef type soup, and homemade Raman with the leftovers. When you know you won't have enough meat for a batch of sausage, it is a great way to utilize the shoulders. My wife shot a button buck about that size. Yes sir! We followed a leg of lamb recipe, finished to 140, and yeah even the fat great flavor. Will definitely be eying a fawn in the bunch a little differently through the crosshairs from now on.Kids had a damage hunt a few years ago that they each got 5 tags for antlerless and could use an unused general season deer tag for either sex. Whatabout these bullets makes them "maximized" as opposed to say a similar grain eldx or eldm at high impact velocities?Commercial. 178gr A-Max, 175 and 190gr SMK with points opened.
I am a bit behind in this thread, but I fear I may have been talking into it as well. Still on the fence between this and a 243.Well you SOBs talked me into it! Haha!!

Get both lol.I am a bit behind in this thread, but I fear I may have been talking into it as well. Still on the fence between this and a 243.
Just one gives me sticker shock.Get both lol.
Could get 2 tikkas there much cheaper in the USA plus you could cash in on some boxing day sales and rebates...perhaps but if your only going to get one the 243 with a 1-8" twist and 108 eldm would be very hard to beat.Just one gives me sticker shock.
I was leaning 243, but this dang thread has me back on the fence.Could get 2 tikkas there much cheaper in the USA plus you could cash in on some boxing day sales and rebates...perhaps but if your only going to get one the 243 with a 1-8" twist and 108 eldm would be very hard to beat.
I was leaning 243, but this dang thread has me back on the fence.i own both there nothing great but if you need a rifle with more over lap plus legal in damn near every state for big game 243 the 223 is definitely a bit cheaper to shoot tho component wise
For a hunting set-up 1:8 twist 243, gives you a better selection of bullets with higher BC. If planning to use as a trainer & for hunting 223 will give you a lot better barrel life.I was leaning 243, but this dang thread has me back on the fence.

Asked differently, why doesnt every deer shot with a 308 eldx or eldm look like this?
Or, would a 223 smk with an opened tip be better than the tmk?
On the smk, you enlarged the open tip?
I was leaning 243, but this dang thread has me back on the fence.
I have seen you say the 77 gr tmk is good out to about 450 yards. That is probably all I would shoot anyways, but I assume a 243 would have a little more effective range. I should know better to assume after getting into this thread.A properly setup 243 is a fantastic hunting rifle. It however, does shot replace what a properly setup 223 does- at all.
I started from the beginning and am on page 50 something. I finally got smart and started snipping all the useful posts into a word document to use as a reference later.52 pages and over 1000 posts, spanning over two years.
Lots of good information and dialog here.
I wonder if anyone has read this thread in it's entirety?
(The OP is still participating, on page 52!)
Still has a ways to go to catch up to the one photo a day thread, though.
Might be worth sharing here once you’re done since you are going to the trouble but then again new people probably still wouldn’t read it and jump in the tread telling all the guys shooting it how wrong they are.I started from the beginning and am on page 50 something.
