Yeah I just looked at some speeds…

22 ARC 62gr ELD-VT @ 3300fps 24” barrel
22-250 60gr BT @ 3580fps
22-250 64gr PP @ 3500fps

Granted the eld should catch up fairly quick
The bT has a bc of .270
The pp .228.

I think that's a bit optimistic.

Like most anytime a manufacturer comes up with something that is magically better, context matters.

"22-250 performance from an AR*"

*assuming 22-250 uses a slow twist and low BC bullets commonly loaded with it and after a certain range to allow higher BCs of bullets in ARC to overcome the velocity disadvantage. If one handloads 88 or 75 ELDs in something like an 8 twist tikka 22-250 it would still bitch slap the #'s from the 22 ARC

The 224 Grendel (essentially the same as the 22 ARC) will run a 53 gr V-Max at 3800+ in a gas gun with a 7 twist. That’s very much within 22-250 performance.

So you loaded the slightly larger (if they use the same dimensions as 6 ARC) grendel to 22-250 factory ammo speeds, thats cool. The 22-250 is still 30%+ bigger case and loaded to the same pressures with the same bullets and level of powder optimization, the 22-250 is still going to be notably faster. Basic physics.

I'd still rather have a 22 ARC i'm just saying context matters.

I personally don’t see much point in the 22ARC. This is mainly because I’m not an AR15 fanatic, and I already have a 1-8 twist 224TTH(22-6mm Remington). I do however, find myself badly wanting the super lite howa mini in the 6mm ARC. I feel the 90 grain copper bullet at 2950fps ( hornady bolt gun data) would be an outstanding hunting companion! Opinions are like buttholes everyone’s got one and no one is wrong for their situation.

The 22 ARC has the same length case as the 6.5 Grendel, and 224 Grendel, and not the shorter 6ARC, so it should be pretty much identical or very very similar in case capacity, and not shorted by the shorter length of the 6ARC. Look a few posts up, I posted the 22 ARC specs.

The 22 ARC would be even better in the Howa Mini with its lack of recoil.

Just build you a 6 Grendel, on a Howa, and keep the extra performance over the 6 ARC.

Im not to up on AR's so forgive my ignorance.

I know these bolt faces exist
223
224 valkyrie - If i remember correctly this will feed in standard ar15 mags but needs a new bolt face.
308

I know the 6.5 grendel needs different mags then standard.

Where does the 22 arc and 6 arc fall in these?

7.62x39* / 6.5 Grendel / .220 Russian

*Edit to add, 7.62x39 uses a different depth of bolt face for ARs, despite being the same rim diameter as the Grendel and ARC.

It’s a .447 bolt face, same as the .220 Russian, 7.62x39, and PPCs.

Cool for a gas gun, but if you're going to do a bolt gun, why not just do 22 creed? Just like 6arc, go 6 creed. Load it down if you want a bit less recoil and match the ARC velocities while having factory rifles/bolts/barrels everywhere.

Who makes 6ARC in a bolt gun? Savage and howa I think are the only 2. I'd imagine those will be the only two for this as well.
Proof makes a 6 arc bolt gun. My step dad has one. It’s pretty sweet little gun. 16.5” barrel

I know this is unnecessary, but......

It would be so cool if Tikka would build a real mini action for 223, 22 ARC, and 6 ARC. I have a CZ 527, and while they aren't perfect, I have grown kind of fond of that tiny little action. I know, it's only a little bit of length difference, but I want what I want!

Dimension to shoulder is the key dimension, I only see case length? Being as it's necked down, it makes sense that the case would be longer if it maintained the same neck length.

Side by Side, the 22 ARC looks to have a shorter neck, and maybe even more capacity than the 224 Grendel, being that they both have the same case length. Definitely not the smaller dimensions and lesser capacity of the 6 ARC.

Just listened to the Hornady podcast. I was hoping they would talk about big game applications, and maybe the upcoming 80gr ELD-X, but it didn't sound like they were going to slap that sleeping bear......

I like it. Fits in gas guns well, there will be good factory available, and you get great performance out of something that should be very well behaved. Having everything standardized and on the shelf makes it the obvious choice (to me) vs the many similar variations and wildcats, at least for 98% of shooters.

I have a 20" 22 BR on a Tikka that I shoot 88's out of around 2800, it might be my favorite rifle. This is just a factory version in a slightly different wrapper, that happens to fit in an AR if you want.

While I know the Hornady brass probably won't be excellent, it'll be serviceable and you can probably get factory loaded rounds for a similar price as Alpha or Lapua BR brass alone.
