2025 Montana alternate draw question

Actually, I do hunt my home state. We are required to set aside tags for out of state applicants.

I'm asking about MT Mule Deer not Elk, but this thread seems to be the best place to post my question rather than start a whole new thread. I was unsuccessful in my MT mule deer draw this year so I made sure I got signed up for the alternate list. For a hunter I guess I am not a patient person so I've gone back to the website a dozen or so times since the registration period closed 2 days (day and a half) ago. It now tells me that I'm on the list but won't have my number until the list is randomized in mid-July. I have a screen shot dated July 2 of last year when I was tracking this for my brother when he hadn't drawn.

Did something change year to year?

Is Montana FWP under-promising so a lot of impatient jerks like me don't beat down their doors?

Can I expect to see my number sooner rather than later?

If they just would have awarded me a license in the initial draw we could have saved alot of this heartburn, refund, etc...
looks like the list is updated

Karen? There very few Karens where I live. I'm not one of them. We are just sick of watching outsiders hunting in our state.

Thank you, I see that. I got a good number so it looks like I'll be able to hunt this year. Wishing all the Montana residents luck as well. Every non-resident (other than me) can piss off!

If I had known how thin skinned you are, I would have just surfed thru. Furthermore, this NOT your thread.

You can solve this problem. Just move to a state where hunting sucks and you'll have nothing to &itch about

Any idea how many tags are pushed out through the alternate list every year? Ive gotten lucky on it several times....more a curiosity where it stops or if they ever publish how many they start with (I know more are returned over time).

I think towards the end of the season they go through a fair number of unaccepted offers. This would disproportionately inflate the numbers. For example, I was number 415 in 2023. Went out to Montana as an observer, camp help for my family who were luckier in the draw. I ended up getting an email after I got back from Montana but there was only a week or two left of the season so I didn't accept. I think a fair number of people on the alternate list were in my same boat.

Last year my brother was at 304 after the alternate list was randomized and he got his email right around November 4th. That tag was put to good use.

Anyone on the Big Game combo list? Just wondering how many people applied for that one...

I'm number 316 / 1552 for Deer. Seems like I may get a chance at the tag. albeit, likely, later this fall. Anyone willing to share their number in the queue when their number gets called as we move towards the fall? I'm curious to know ~what number in the queue is currently being offered and how this queue progresses into Aug/Sept/Oct, etc..

You can go back to the website periodically and watch your number improve. For example after the first round of tags gets released your number of 316 will probably be less than 250. It starts fast then slows down. It will move incrementally. I'd wager your guess of later fall is accurate based on past experience. Probably early to mid November. Best guess.
