18” 6.5PRC - handicapped with a SA?

It is slow, and I’m out of case capacity with the retumbo. He wanted something cleaner than rl26 as that’s what he used to use, but it we have to go there we will haha. H4350 and standard primers will be a test along with n565. I bet 3000 is doable.

His CA ridgeline was using rl26 and a 24” barrel and we got like 3175fps with the same bullet.
3000 from an 18" is gonna be up around 80k psi. Why do this?

If it gets there it gets there, if it doesn’t it doesn’t, I look to the brass and bolt feel for pressure not any calculators 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also if I know I’m on an upper node I won’t chase velocity. I go until I find a good spot and that’s where it’s going to be. I got his CA ridgeline 300wm going like 3275fps with a 181 hammer. It’s hot but virgin brass is more forgiving. Run it for now😂

I’ve got an 18” tikka (wide land cut down by class 3 machine before they closed shop). Initial tests with 135 A tips and h4831 SC are slower than I wanted, but this barrel has sub 100 rounds through it, so hopefully it will speed up.

My plan is to run 130s for hunting (primarily deer as I have yet to draw an elk tag, and would probably have another barrel spun up for elk). I just need to decide between the 130 Sierra game changer, 130 Berger vld hunting, 130 eldm, or 129 ablr.

The only powders I have on hand and avaliable locally are h4831sc, h1000, h4350, varget. I’ve been searching for n560/565 with no luck. I also intend to try load work again using magnum primers if I can find some.

Have any more insights? I’m about to start reloading for my 18” 6.5prc and want to shoot 143 eldx or 140 elite hunter. Starting Currently getting just over 2700 with factory precision hunter (factory 143 eldx).

If there is anything that you have found and/or suggest, I would greatly appreciate the info. Also if you have heard anything from others with 18” 6.5 prcs that is meaningful, I’m all ears! Starting pretty fresh so new powders, new brass, new primers, etc. Cheers and thanks.

My tikka barrel is just slow. I actually have a 22" C6 on the way for it now and shortened up my suppressor a bit lol. I hit 2700 with N565 pretty easy at 58 grains and didn't push must past that with the 140 EH. Its a SUPER accurate barrel, consistently sub 0.4. The powders i used were H1000, H4831SC, N565 and Retumbo. Several people have hit 2800 in 18", i just had a really slow barrel so I don't honestly have a ton to offer.

I really appreciate it. Hope the new setup works out for you. I knowingly neutered my setup and regret it, ha.

Last question- With temp stability being mandatory and really wanting to push the 140eh as fast as I practically can, which powder(s) would you suggest in order of preference?

Again, I really appreciate the and sorry to keep hounding the subject.

All the above listed powders I used are pretty temp stable. I live and hunt Western Nebraska and eastern WY so we get wild temp swings so i leaned the same way

N565 is faster for me but H1000 is more accurate. My 18" barrel is fast enough to move 147 ELD over 1800 fps out to 850 yards. I'm good with that.

Try 4831sc in the 54.5 working to 56 and watch for pressure because you will be on the edge to heavy pressure depending on your components. It will likely be one of the more accurate powders.

I'd seriously consider the 130tmk by Sierra. The tmk line has a great reputation for killing very well. BC isn't the best, but it has pretty short bearing so you should be able to push the speed pretty fast.

That was my plan if I kept the 18, I just have 500 140 EHs lol
