Im looking for a livhtweight 16" bolt gun for up to elk size game out to 300yards.

Dont want to break the bank either, Have been getting recommendations on the 6.5prc

Also plan on running suppressed so threads are important. Already have a 20" 6.5CM AND 24" 300WM

With certainty. Tmks and elds only need 1800 fps impact velocity for excellent terminal performance.

Looks like .223 works:

5.56mm seems too small? Step up to a heavy hitter like 6mm!

Really on the hunt for big power? Go with the big boy caliber: 6.5mm!

Almost any centerfire cartridge with a 16" barrel is going to be fine at 300 yards on elk with a good bullet. A PRC or magnum is not needed at that range. 6.5 creedmoor, .308win, .30-06, .270win, 7mm-08, etc. If you own a 6.5 creedmoor and you're comfortable hunting with it, it'll do everything you need at that range.

My comfort zone goes to 700yds with my 20" 6.5 creedmoor because I've shot it a lot at distances beyond that, and that is the range at which the bullet I shoot reaches its minimum consistent expansion threshold (1800fps).

308 for easy to find and cheap ammo available for more target practice. Easy to find reloading components for other than primers and even they are getting easier to find.

If you are going to add a suppressor, then you need to keep in mind that some have barrel length restrictions, esp for prc/magnum rounds.

I have a Model Seven in 308 with a 16.5 inch barrel and a 7-08 with an 18, doesn’t get much nicer to tote around.
