Hello, we will be using brooks range aviation as our transporter on august 25th of this year. Curious what everyone uses for tents? Do you guys take two tents or just one? There will be 4 of us gong and will be shipping our camping gear and misc. gear to them before. Our wall tents will just be too heavy. Looking at maybe the bighorn II from cabelas and maybe a small tepee for our gear. thoughts?

Also does a person have a must have and a must leave at home gear list for up there?

Search some of the other caribou and sheep threads. I think there are quite a few detailed gear lists for this trip in other threads.

Two floorless 4 person tipi tents would be my choice. A silnylon ground cloth. and my luxury light cot.

Myself and two buddies are also flying with BRA on the 25th! We are taking an Eight Man Cabelas Alaskan Guide and a couple tarps. We will be going in "heavy" as far as gear is concerned as we have plenty of weight limit. I can send you my "in progress" gear list by email if you shoot me a PM.

At least two of the guys you are going with will be able to stand straight up in any tent you have that's a bonus.;)

No, I never have. I use a Ti Goat Vertex 8 and really like it. I think I'd opt for 2 tents. Bring a couple of tarps and p-cord so you can make a shelter for your meat.

Hey brother, if you're having to buy a new tent for your trip...consider the winds in the Brooks Range where BRA will drop you. I've done that region in dome-style shelters and had high quality tents that flatten over our faces when then wind collapsed the structure. While most trips you wont have winds that crazy...our environment is changing with huge spikes of wind and temperature fluctuations, especially in the Brooks.

Consider a Kifaru tipi. My general rule of thumb is to double size of tent for number of peeps. example: 2 guys can be comfy in a 4-6 man, 3 guys might be better off with a 6 or 8-man.

substrate is uaully ideal for tipis in that region.

LB, out

Think Snow (thnksno):

My policy is a VE-25 for each person. But, I'm only using Piper PA18's, so that I can access tight little spots where few others (if any others) are able to go. A larger aircraft would allow for larger tents. However, I tend to find that a VE-25 per each person is plenty adequate for up to two (2) weeks.

We flew with bra last year, just 2 of us we had the 4 person Alaskan guide series tent it was perfect for two guys we were there for 10 days, Larry is correct you should double your size to the amount of people you have.

Definitely bring two tents. You should have plenty of room for a bigger tent, depending what aircraft they are flying you in on. BRA is a first class operation, and they operate Beavers, and Otter, and a 206. As for tents, the Ve-25's are junk, I'd suggest either a Hilleberg, or, believe it or not, if you want a bigger tent, the Cabelas XWT tents aren't bad for the money.

That's hilarious! In about 30 years of using VE-25's all across Alaska, I've never had one blow apart on me. But, to each their own, I guess (lol).
