    Music ruins hunting videos !

I'm not terribly offended by music unless it's obnoxiously loud or corny. Worse offenders are guys with shaky video, bad microphones resulting in hard-to-hear conversations, and videos that are 10 minutes but should be about two minutes long.

    THE Perfect camera for hunts/wildlife

Ryan, a bit late, but how about your smartphone with a few Moment lenses, a Rode microphone, and a small Joby tripod like the Joby GripTight GorillaPod Pro tripod. This is what I've been shooting video on this spring. 4K video. If you also use your phone with an app like GAIA GPS, an inReach...

    Getting Married and Hunting

I agree that marriage doesn't tie you down unless you tie yourself down. One thing to remember: Your wife was attracted to you for certain reasons and in theory that includes your fitness, zest for life and dedication to your own goals. Don't listen to the voices that tell you to behave in a...

What gear was a pleasant surprise?

Gaia GPS App. Gaia GPS, and improvements in smartphone ruggedness, have finally convinced me that the phone can be a very good replacement for a Garmin. Additionally, I left my mirrorless camera home during a recent backing trip and shot video and stills with my smartphone. I used a small Joby...

Best bang for your buck Gear

Tarptent comes to mind. They're not what I'd call "cheap" but they are significantly less expensive than premium brands. Very lightweight, functional and sturdy. I think I paid about $180 for my Protrail a few years ago and it has gone the distance.

Are paper maps a dying breed??

GPS is great but I always have a free USGS map printed from the Nat Geo website. And a small Suunto base plate compass.

    Colorado High Country Summer Camping...Bugs?

I haven't run floorless for a few years, except late season hunting and winter, and mosquitoes are the reason.

    Good resource/classes to learn photography

Forgive me, but I thought of a couple more things: Study up on the "rules" of artistic composition like the rule of thirds, etc. This will help you compose pictures in your mind. Then once you get good at them, break them! To really improve your skill set you have to take 10,000 photos...

    Good resource/classes to learn photography

That's a good camera. It's important to learn the fundamentals first including aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. Those three fundamentals are more or less the same on every camera, and once you understand how those three things work together, you can shoot most cameras well. Check out some "how...

    NY Times article, Jason Hairston

It's tragic. Mostly because Americans continue funding the madness known as professional football. Bring this to an end by boycotting your favorite team, and using the time at the gym instead.

    Wonder how he did it?

I'll bet he trained with ocean open swims, eating raw wild game meats, and wearing custom suits.

BHA Supporting Legislation Outlawing the Sale of Information on Big Game Locations

I just don't understand buying coordinates. Take a weekend and walk around. For that matter I don't understand hiring a guide. I'm with the BHA on this, although I'd be in favor of restrictions on guide services too. How many of us have met "that" guide who fabricates ridiculous stories (e.g...

Do you keep a round in the chamber?

During elk hunts I'd usually chamber a round. I've still got these safety features: (1) Safety switch, (2) finger control, and (3) muzzle control. Had a buddy get burned in November because he didn't chamber a round. I saw the elk and tapped his shoulder. He aimed and pulled the trigger. He...

    Emergency Meds Rx

Update: I visited my doc yesterday and he refilled all my prescriptions, including a prescription pain killer, anti-emetic, and antibiotic. Was able to spend about 20 minutes talking to him about his own experience administering such meds in the context of search and rescue work. We also talked...
