My 1st time on an guided archery elk and only my 2nd elk hunt. Back country, 9-6 thru 9-16 looking for a herd bull, encounters, stalking, highs & lows, camp cooking, seeing and hearing elk, mountains, bears. Just to soak it all in and hope for the best!!

I am hunting a new unit this year, so a few things to learn still.

Goals are as follows:
1) more controlled bugling/calling to bring one in
2) Not get in such a hurry to cover ground. Last year we were nearly racing around trying to find bulls but if we had slowed down we would have been more successful and not so tired
3) I dont sleep much as it is, so I want to night bugle and listen to what is going on a night to prep for the next day
4) Obviously sling an arrow at a nice bull.

We have a newb in camp this year.
1st time hunting out west for the 23 year old.

Get him his first elk.

That would be my 20th person to help get their 1st elk
I love this! One of my problems every year is being in a little bit of a hurry to punch my tag so I can help my partners. Some have no experience and some have a little but never killed an elk. Counting my outfitting days I can’t remember how many hunters killed their first elk with me. It never gets old!!! But helping personal friends or friends of friends is a blast. One of the things I get a kick out of is listening to them tell other people stories about their hunt. They’ll never forget it. They thought they knew me until they saw me doing what I do in the mountains. Teaching them horse sense is more than half the battle.

So my goal this year is to talk two hunters into NOT shooting a cow and filling 3 tags with bulls. After their Colorado hunts they are ready for revenge and trigger happy! I’ll show them some bulls for 2 days before hunting starts so they aren’t short on confidence and let cows walk… for at least 5 days.

Good luck to everyone. I like the list of goals. Very realistic. 400orBust I don’t know why a guy would solo camp 8-12 miles in but if that’s part of what makes you happy then go for it and best of luck to you. Be safe!

And to all the first timers: Keep your mind open. Get in the zone. Forget about deer hunting tactics. Yes it’s going to hurt a little because it’s new and it’s going to max you out physically and mentally. Push past that! Learn to laugh off the tough days. Everyone has them. Say to yourself “This might suck temporarily but in a month I’ll wish I was here” and make the most of every day.

Good bad or ugly everyone should come back and tell their hunt story. There’s a lot to be learned from reading actual hunt stories. Take notes! Keep a journal.

My goals are as many good opportunities as possible, hunt most the season, good weather, low pressure where I hunt each day, and a good shot angle/opening on a good bull. Gotta love elk country in September........regardless what else happens.

The past three years I've been helping others with their tags, and haven't even had an elk tag the last two years. But this year is mine.

I'd like to call in a monster bull for my brother to shoot down in the Gila, no idea what size, whatever is monster enough for us (not trophy hunters at all, so it wont be huge).

If that is successful that leaves me a couple weeks here in CO and ive been looking for new hunting spots this year. Have a couple that ... have elk currently.... so i'm looking forward to seeing if they'll still hold those elk in the second half of September or if i'll be scouting with a bow in hand. Goal being.... a cow or legal bull in a new hunting spot i havent hunted before.

3 of us Drew LE Wyoming tags. Goals are as follows.

1. Have a great time with my 12yo son (no tag just coming along for guy time and hunting experience)
2. Get the old man in our group his bull (my buddy's Dad and archery mentor/second dad to me)
3. Kill my first bull
4. Get my buddy a bull

We have 9 days of archery hunting and then will come back a few weeks later for 10 days of rifle. Hoping to fill all 3 tags, but if someone has to sacrifice I vote that person is my buddy 🤣. He's already got one on the wall!

My goal is always meat in the freezer (cow and bull tag), but equally important is forming great memories and stories to share with family and friends. However, while I will probably shoot any legal bull, I am still looking for a bull that will top my last two 5x5 bulls that I have previously taken.

Headed to Colorado for 9 days in the wilderness with my wife and bow, if I get an elk that is a bonus. I would like a 6x6 but not all that important.
