Bullet, barrel length, powder charge, and velocity?

I'm putting together a rifle with a 24" barrel and thinking of shooting the 140 RDF for competitions.

All out of a 22" Hawk Hill. This is one of those barrels that spoils you.

156 Berger
Lapua SRP
41.3 RL 16
CCI 450
COAL 2.880ish
2650 fps

140 Elite Hunter and 140 Hornady BTHP
Lapua SRP
41.8 H4350
CCI BR-4
COAL- 140 BTHP 2.800
140 Elite Hunter 2.820
2730 fps

130 TMK
Lapua SRP
39.2 Varget
CCI BR-4
COAL 2.800ish
2830 fps

Work up on your own! 156 load is just a bit spicy.
I intend to do some work with 130 TMK and H4350 this summer. The 130 TMK is probably my solution going forward.

Lapua brass, 41.5 of h4350, about any 140. This has worked for a lot of barrels. Going around 2750 in a 26”.

I’m personally a fan of 140 and 144 hybrids.

Can be pushed faster, but I’m not a fan of being on the ragged edge of pressure, especially on a match rifle.

Planning on this for NRL? Iv been thinking of getting a 24” creedmoor in a light contour, or a proof prefit for nrl next time around. Thinking I can take my current prs rifle with a lighter barrel and no weights, and make it work for open heavy. That and I’m thinking of cutting most prs style matches out and trying to shoot more nrl hunter.

Yes, I'm building a rifle for the Open Light division.

I am pulling the barrel off the ctr and doing the same thing. I have a feeling a lot of guys are following suit haha

I'm not sure if a lot of people are doing it but my heavy barrel on my 6.5 Cheater Mag should be toast by then and I want to go lighter to match my hunting rifles closer.

Starline brass - 19.25" T3x lite barrel. 143 ELD-x and 140 elite hunters

Data from before that finding pressure w/ various bullets. Same 19.25" barrel.

T3x Lite w/ original barrel cut to 19.25". New starline brass 1x resized w/ CCI primers & H4350. Measured w/ a magnetospeed sporter attached to a suppressor w/ sensitivity on Hi 2.

Went through a ladder with some 140s and 143s today just to get an idea of what velocity I'm getting. 32 degrees out. 70 in the house and I brought rounds out 3 at a time and shot them in different orders each time. Just trying to see if I get pressure signs anywhere. Loaded as long as they'd fit in my CTR magazine. I have all the measurements written down and how far off the lands they are in a different book. I loaded these a year ago and never got around to shooting them. Will post headstamp pics later and see if anyone has an opinion on pressure signs. Maybe a minor swipe at 43+ but I get that fairly often from this gun so hard to say.

One thing that's interesting is that the 143s are slightly faster than the 140s. Guessing that has to do w/ bullet shape and bearing surface? 147s are also faster but it was 15 degrees warmer when I shot those.

A friend loaded these for me awhile back.

I did notice he has a "typo" on the card. It should read IMR 4350, not 4053.

Edit: He believes 41.8 was the final charge weight.

140 vld hunt
Hornady brass 45.2gr = ~2860fps
Alpha brass 44.5gr = ~2828fps

2.815 overall length

20" vanguard with brake and Hornady brass 45.2gr was 2830fps

I have ran the same loads in a few different rifles.

All of them were Lapua SRP Brass, CCI 450, H4350 and 147 ELDM.

41 Grains
28" Preferred barrel - 2803 fps
26" Bergara MG Lite - 2760 fps

40 Grains
28" Preferred barrel - 2698 fps
26" Bergara MG Lite - 2673 fps

Can't believe more people aren't shooting the 139 Scenar. At 2775fps, it's just stupid accurate, and a very reliable killer of deer sized game and hogs. Doesn't get any better for the 6.5CM IMO.
