You ever skip a year of hunting to do something else?

Had to end a season once when I bought a house that was a total gut job and remodel. Spent 8 hours a night from October through December. Once we got moved in I just wanted to rest for a while.

I've never missed an entire season from everything but the last couple years haven't been about my hunts. My oldest daughter is now 14 so the last couple years my focus has been on seeing her succeed with her tags, so no elk hunting for me during that time. Her glowing smile after harvest is everything I could ever need from hunting. And this next fall she starts at high school level, between that and club ball it really limits what she can do so we put her in for draw tags here at home that work better with her busy schedule! This year my oldest boy gets to start Mentor hunts so the only hunt I'm going to do is an elk hunt and he will Mentor on all my other tags. Since my kids have an interest in hunting now my wife has started to hunt as of last year, 1 of the best things that could have ever happened in our lives!! We still plan family time that isn't around hunting, we just do other times of the year. I remember thinking the first year of no elk hunting would be horrible! It wasn't, actually it made life easier but not making every available minute to be in the field. As a matter of fact the kids, wife and I are thinking of skipping our spring bear hunt to do a fishing trip instead. Maybe do a rat shooting trip for something different? If you have passion in other things don't let them pass you by!!!

Everyone has things that come up that require rescheduling hunting days. but, the only time I have missed the entire hunting season was when I was going through cancer treatments.

I skipped a few years after having some high bills to pay. Had to shed some gear too. Still got in some public hunts back home (FL)

I missed 2 complete seasons 4 yrs apart as I built 2 new homes for myself from the ground up while working full time. A choice I now regret as I do not get those years back.

I had 3 boys in 3 years and a busy work schedule that prompted a 6 year hiatus. Fortunately, i picked the bow back up last year and don't plan to put it down again. I don't see anything wrong with skipping a season to chase another dream, especially if you are living within your means.

The only reason any other activities were invented is to give me something to do when hunting season is closed.
.
Well said. I've missed some hunts here and there but never a whole season. If I don't put 3 deer in the freezer we won't have meat for the year. Now I've got two daughters so I'm thinking we need at least 4 ;).
