If you are hunting out west I would look into drawing a doe tag near your elk area. Doe tags are easy to come by in many areas.

yankeehunter is the mule deer DIY? I am as green as they come to Western hunting, but with hopefully be putting my first Antelope on the wall this year. Would anyone with experience know if there will be left over mule deer tags once I draw my antelope tag? Thanks

Yes, all my hunting is DIY on public land. I one day might do a guided hunt just for the experience of it.
