I'll be interested in the answers too.

I've checked the historical draw odds and sometimes it seems to make a difference and surprisingly sometimes it makes very little difference except to your bank account. I'm sure the hunt area is the key factor. I've never tried it. I just hunt cows and hope for a miracle in the random.

You really need to analyze the draw odds for the unit in question. It typically saves you one point. Sometimes the draw odds are less with special because people automatically think it is higher odds and more people put into the special. It will also get you some tags with zero points or on second choice so you can get a point and a tag.

I am a non resident and am applying for Elk unit 21. If I apply for the special draw GoHunt shows that I have 25% chance of drawing. If I apply for the regular draw I have a 14% chance of drawing.

Used to be... I was able to draw 5 WY elk tags in 7 years not too long ago. 3 of them being good LE tags and the other 2 general tags as 2nd choice. The good old days are gone. Marginally better odds now on some hunts, no better on others. I'm in for the regular general tag this year. That one is not worth $1350 and my points for me to bow hunt in WY. There are some other states I can spend the difference on.

Count those numbers to be less with point creep and more people applying overall. All of the units our group has been eye-balling over the last 2 seasons have went up 1 point each year regarding draw difficulty.

The elk unit I am applying for this year requires two more points in the regular than the special. I am paying so I can hunt.

I recommend looking at the WY site. This is the case in some units, not all.

call Brady and ask him, they’ve addressed it multiple times. They created their "trend line" to provide a "predictive" type look at what can be expected. The only guy doing predictive odds is Ron Wold doing OR odds.
Thanks for sharing that info. Either way I think its a valuable tool for formulating my multi state application strategy.

Depends on the particular area and the preference point #’s . If you want to hunt this year and special will get you there then I’d say it’s worth it. Also factor in you will have less PP’s to buy.
