I am looking for general information on a specific Wyoming deer unit, but the mods won't let me post the Unit #. I wasn't asking for anything about specific areas, or even asking about the population so not sure why it wasn't allowed, but here it goes again:

The general area in Wyoming has a boundary of: west of the powder river, east of Buffalo, and mostly north of I-90. PM me if you want the exact unit #. This will be on BLM land, using the very few access points. Will be doing a decent amount of hiking to try to be away from the limited access points. Planning to be ~ 1 week archery, ~ 1 week rifle.

General questions were:

1) is there a reliable water source that can be safely drank with a LifeStraw, or will I need to pack in my water? If I draw a tag, I will be there last week of September/ Early October. My thoughts are that I may backpack in for several days.

2). If you know this area well, please PM me. I had a question on a single area that had a few BLM roads. Just trying to understand if a Bronco Sport would be able to access those patches of roads.

3). What should I expect as far as terrain? Is it generally navigable, and "rolling hills", or will there be any steep dropoffs? I am planning on doing a large dose of hiking because access is limited. Previous elk hunts in Montana 10 miles was a normal day of hiking during archery.

I mostly likely will be solo because my normal hunting buddies cannot go. The above questions are just general safety questions to be prepared.

Thank you for any help.

If the mods slapped your hand for posting a unit number (which is against the rules) you’ll probably get slapped again for essentially posting the unit again by way of the description.

So if someone has great information for this unit and they help you, they are essentially lowering their own draw odds. The days of using the easy button are over. Competition is too high. Good luck to you.

Not sure I would follow that same train of thought, given I am putting in for that region and planning that unit no matter what. I am not asking for great information, just a couple general questions.

If people don't want to give up their top secret info on whether I will get the shits from drinking water from water sources with purification devices I guess they can keep their lips tight.

I never read anything that said unit #'s were against the rules. I found something that said it was "frowned upon depending on the context". That is also the reason why I said we could discuss in PM for the very general questions I was asking.

  1. Posting specific unit numbers, while not against the rules for even for members in good standing, is still sometimes frowned upon by members depending upon the context of the post. A good rule of thumb to follow when discussing specifics of a unit is to ask for Private Messages or share information in private messages. While posting specific unit numbers is frowned upon, posting specific drainages or trailheads are grounds for much worse from the rokslide community lol. Use your common sense, use private messages, etc. we are all in this together and to help each other.
I get that a unit # is very easy to search on any search engine. I don't think a description is as easy. And even so, I don't think the info I am asking would damage any areas and contribute to overcrowding.

Have you tried searching topics about the specific unit you are referring to and sending a private message to those individuals?

Ya OP, we can't win either.

We let people post units, we get heat (and other Bronco sports will show up on those same roads),

but if we don't let people post units, they're upset that they have to work harder to find the info (which in the long game only benefits them.)

Tell us how to best manage this dilemma. We're at this rule because we listened to members but if there's better ideas, we're still listening.

but to your question, any place that is new to me, I always treat the water. So that is what I'd do in your case.

Once I've been to an area, and talked to hunters, sheepherders who've safely drank it, then I will to. Hope that helps.

for road access, the BLM office should have a ranger, or at least a tech that has been around those roads. Give that a shot.

and on terrian, your onX or equiv. in 3d mode/topo lines should give you a great idea. Just compare it to areas you've physically been at. That usually gets me close enough to know what to expect.

Along those lines Wyoming in particular seems to be very helpful. I called and talked to a biologist once about grouse just looking for general info because I was brand new and he just flat out told me where to go, what to look for, and a couple spots to try. Might try placing a call and see if you can talk to someone who's driven those roads and knows about the water.

Allow info to be shared by contributing members in a hidden sub forum. Add the rule on the sign up page that says don't ask for unit info and don't try to skirt around it with a unit description.
And I'd Ban Hammer every member who asked for info with their 1st post; those guys didn't give a crap about Rokslide till they drew a tag and won't be back.

I understand, there is really no real good way to allow sharing but prevent it from causing other issues.

What hidden sub forum? I’m already paying Robby $300 a month for a single gps coordinate, he just sends me in circles. Banning is a tough double edged sword at times, don’t want a reputation that the forum isn’t welcoming. Everything we do or how we do it is a game of give and take.

Exactly. Part of the reason for the rule was to encourage participation as there was a large number of people who would sign up then ask for hand outs and never return. That dilutes the forum but we don’t want to go full zero tolerance and keep people away who genuinely want to be apart of the forum. Discretion while not perfect seems to be a good way to handle it.

I don't have unit specific intel but I've driven 1,000 miles to hunt units I've never stepped foot in and have learned a few things that may help you.

1. Get Onx and start e scouting. Then pick 3 or 4 likely spots to set up base camp just off a dirt road. Download offline maps for the 3 or 4 areas. Use Onx to find glassing points, streams, ponds, stock tanks and mark them so that you can find them when you arrive. Do this for all 3 or 4 areas you E scouted. If you only do this for 1 area you might show up and find a dozen trucks or an outfitter in your area. You need plan A B C and D.
2. Plan to set up base camp next to you truck. Take gear necessary to spike out if you find a great area once you get there.
3. Always take water with you. I take at least 1 gallon per day for drinking and a gallon a day for washing dishes etc at base camp. My drinking water is purchased in gallon jugs and frozen then they go into my big ass cooler with bags of ice and my perishable food. Washing water is in 7 gal Reliance Aquatainers. Ditch the Lifestraw. Get a real filtration system. A simple Sawyer squeeze would work.
4. Take gear to self recover your vehicle. D shackle for your hitch, kinetic snatch rope/soft shackles, and traction boards. I also carry a 3 ton ratchet puller a tree strap, a snatch block, a yellow tow strap, shovel, axe and a chainsaw. I carry chains for front and rear. With your bronco I'd guess that you may be limited to tire cables but they are better than nothing.
5. Invest in an Inreach.
6. Carry a quality first aid kit and some emergency supplies in your pack so you can spend an unexpected night out on the mountain. Even with an Inreach if you get in trouble a rescue might take 12-24 hours.

If you have questions PM me and we can set up a call.

The hidden sub forum/thread would be a similar system to what is currently set up for posting in the classifieds or PM'ing another member.
Its been a while but I remember anybody can read the classifieds here on Rokslide, but they can't post in the classifieds or PM others until they have 10 messages...

The hidden sub forum/thread would be hidden from the people that don't have the minimum number of posts. They couldn't even read the content in the hidden thread.

Im on an ice fishing forum that has this feature, but I don't know how they set it up. That forum is set up so when you have the minimum number of posts, you can see more detailed information about lake/fishing conditions
