I know there is a ton of folks with 4-5 points but what are some u it’s that give a reasonable chance at seeing elk and a decent chance to shoot. Who can help me pick a spot that has a spot to glass and able to see some things.

I would spend some time scouting and find a spot that will work for you.. 4 points gets you a general tag. Spend multiple weekends in different areas with boots on the ground before the season starts. If you can't do that then paying a guide is probably a better idea. WY Fish and Game site has information to get you started.

You willing to shoot a cow or smaller bull? There are some options other than general that are pretty cool hunts if giant antlers aren't a priority.
Yes I am willing for a cow or smaller bull. I am not looking for a giant just a fun time with decent odds and some options as to where may be decent. Obviously if I was in an area for archery or first rifle that I could see and hear a few that would be better than just being lucky to stumble on one and that was luck. I’m physically able to hike and work most any terrain and willing. I’d like to glass and see what’s out there. I’m a flat lander that works brush so I’ve always enjoyed out west with the terrain and ability to spot. I’ve elk hunted before so it’s not my first but I’m no pro.

Area XXX Type 4 can be drawn. It is a cow hunt but it is a great experience that guys spend max points on for bulls. If you spend reasonable time, you will have opportunities to shoot cows and will see plenty of elk.

There are other hunts like this that don't allow you to shoot a big bull but can put elk in the freezer much easier than general. Do your homework and you should find something that interests you.

As mentioned above, spending the extra money on the special tag opens up further options.

Good luck planning the hunt!

What are everyone's thoughts on 6 points? I'm of the belief that I may as well just wait another 7 to 10 until I can draw a higher end unit and just keep trying to win the lottery in New Mexico.

Really depends what your goals are. If you want a big bull, your chances go up the longer you can wait. If you just want to hunt elk, go hunting.

Trophy bull is the goal. I Have family in area 7 and area 100 so I would have a pretty good head start, but I dont want to keep chasing points if I can get a good hunt in a similar unit with say 10 points.

You will probably never draw a type 1 tag in area 100 unless you get extremely lucky in the random drawing (1/158 odds this past year). You are just too far behind in points and the points required is increasing by 1 point per year.

Area 7 will likely take you another 30+ years to draw unless you hit in the random drawing (1/53 odds this past year).

Point creep is very real and climbing. Area 7 has been climbing by about 1/2 point yearly. If everything stayed the same, you could draw when you had 16 points. However, it isn't going to stay the same. It is very likely Wyoming LQ tags are going to a 90/10 ratio. This reduction of tags will increase point creep to over 1 point per year for several years before it slows down.

Guys playing the PP game in Wyoming need to really evaluate their options. The DIY trophy hunts of the past for non-residents will be once in a lifetime hunts in the future. I personally believe most would be better served paying for private access in a general area if they really want to shoot a big bull.

Which units would be decent units to pay for private access in with say 5 points for general and not talking trophy but chance of seeing a few bulls

You don’t need to pay double to enter the special drawing. You have enough points to guarantee a general license in the regular drawing for half the cost of a special license.

The benefit to a general license is you can hunt your area more often than a limited quota area…. usually. I don’t care where you hunt the more time you spend there the higher your success rate will be. The general areas have plenty of elk and some darn nice bulls and in most you can shoot either sex elk. Win/win/win.

Just about every general area has those opportunities. The ones that don't are all public.

You aren't wrong but I still believe a rookie stands a lot higher chance of an elk in other areas. An awful lot of guys go to Wyoming yearly on a general because they heard how great a hunt it was and come home without having an opportunity.

And then hopefully they drop out of getting more pts.
