You might be right Laramie. I never hunted 100 so I don’t know. But I find that it’s not that hard to get away from people in general areas. Hunting is usually good enough that not that many guys get more than 2 air miles from the road as long as there’s a bit of an obstacle such as elevation gain. It wouldn’t be hard to have some peace and quiet if a hunter put the effort in to set a spike site. If you were to tell me the hunting was just easier I might look it over and think about spending double the money. But if the money was a big factor for someone I think they’d be satisfied hunting a general unit. Especially the guys who aren’t after monster bulls. But there’s a few of those too.
I hear you. Just not many rookies capable of identifying where to spike or even how to do it. That said, we don't hunt the same general areas and they definitely aren't created equally. For instance, it's pretty hard to get much more than a mile from a road in many general areas.

I am really frustrated with WY points. I have drawn a few good tags in other states over the last years so I have been casually looking at WY to use my elk points. I remember looking at the Bighorns with 5 points and now at 8 points I am still looking at the same units. Creep really sucks. I wish I would have just burned them 6 years ago. I would have had 2 or maybe even 3 hunts if I had just went hunting at the earliest opportunities.

I’d burn them on a general this yer, otherwise you’ll be kicking yourself for continuing to miss out.

Im using them. I tried last year but drew my Henry's deer tag so I withdrew my app on the last day. Only question is try to get a LE tag or go general. Hate to burn 8 points on a general tag but it is what it is.
I would not burn 8 on a general tag. My son also has 8 and I won't let him do that.

I have hunted WY 6 times over the last 10 or so years. 3 LE hunts and 3 General hunts. The general hunts are good(I killed a 320 bull on my last one), but they really don't compare to the LE hunts in terms of overall quality of the hunt, and you really have to work much harder for a good bull. You may or may not kill a bigger bull, but the experience is better on the LE hunts. Number of people, un-pressured elk, etc...

I now have 1 point(my dad has 7, but he will be 75 this year). We are solidly in the General pool now, but at 8 I would do the research to do one LE hunts. You could have a good hunt this year or next(units I have hunted) or you could have an even better hunt in the next few years(units I have done extensive research on and spent time in). You could have hunted a General hunt 6 years ago. Would be a waste with 8 IMHO.

The biggest thing with points is know that when you start down this path, things change. Whether it be point creep for the unit you have your eye on, to G&F or legislatures changing the rules in the sandbox. And with recent history, COVID creep has blown up previous point trends. Will Covid creep turn to "normal point creep"? Heck if I know.

Hunt where you can when you can. (IE Per Randy Newberg. "You are going to run out of time before you run out of money.")
