Yes I am willing for a cow or smaller bull. I am not looking for a giant just a fun time with decent odds and some options as to where may be decent. Obviously if I was in an area for archery or first rifle that I could see and hear a few that would be better than just being lucky to stumble on one and that was luck. I’m physically able to hike and work most any terrain and willing. I’d like to glass and see what’s out there. I’m a flat lander that works brush so I’ve always enjoyed out west with the terrain and ability to spot. I’ve elk hunted before so it’s not my first but I’m no pro.
Area XXX Type 4 can be drawn. It is a cow hunt but it is a great experience that guys spend max points on for bulls. If you spend reasonable time, you will have opportunities to shoot cows and will see plenty of elk.
It gives you the exact same permit- you just apply in a different, higher priced pool. Since the cost is higher, generally fewer people apply.
Really depends what your goals are. If you want a big bull, your chances go up the longer you can wait. If you just want to hunt elk, go hunting.
Trophy bull is the goal. I Have family in area 7 and area 100 so I would have a pretty good head start, but I dont want to keep chasing points if I can get a good hunt in a similar unit with say 10 points.
By then it’ll take twice the amount of points to draw anything, NR limited tags will be cut in half in the future.
You will probably never draw a type 1 tag in area 100 unless you get extremely lucky in the random drawing (1/158 odds this past year). You are just too far behind in points and the points required is increasing by 1 point per year.
Just about every general area has those opportunities. The ones that don't are all public.
You aren't wrong but I still believe a rookie stands a lot higher chance of an elk in other areas. An awful lot of guys go to Wyoming yearly on a general because they heard how great a hunt it was and come home without having an opportunity.
And then hopefully they drop out of getting more pts.
