That's not a calf...but I've shot a few.

elkocd...laffin'

Calf, yearling same thing... Still embarrassing someone would post that as one of their 80 "elk". "Low hanging fruit"! I think that is the mantra of the millennials, but I don't think you are one of them.

Mature cow...maybe you should have your eyes checked. Heads a dead giveaway for anyone that savvies themselves "elkocd" I would think.

Your handle still has me laffin'

While elk certainly are not my thing or even on my top 5 of animals I like to hunt most, I do enjoy hunting late season cows. Most guys that would claim to be elk hunters that I know all agree.

Here since you're ocd about elk and all I'll help you out.

This would be a calf, had a meeting for work in Casper one day, threw the rifle in just in case while scouting for some NR friends coming to hunt elk in a few days. Glassed up a few hundred elk in 4-5 herds. Stopped in one last place and found a dozen or so bedded and figured I'd fill my third tag of the year:

So you understand how to tell a calf from a cow, notice the body size and short face:

Now, the elk you "think" is a "calf":

Oh, and so you're not confused, this would be a bull elk, a spike killed in November to be exact. What us old hands at killing elk call a "velvet spike" the best eating elk you'll find, period. Not real common in November, but the few we've shot have been excellent eating. Shot this one about noon...probably wouldn't have shot it any earlier as it was a PERFECT day to hunt NW Montana whitetails, he just got in the way at the wrong time and place.

Deer hunting conditions remained excellent and shot this buck, the 22nd 4x4 or better buck I saw that day, by 1:00 PM. NW Montana whitetails on public land ARE on the top of my list to hunt, elk are a sideshow/afterthought.

WTF? Who posts a pic of a calf they killed?! Talk about LOW hanging fruit!!! Did you just walk out and stab that poor baby?

I would have never let my son shoot something like that even when he wa 12. Or... even when he wa 6 if he could have had a tag.

I would post a pic of a calf.

Come on, take a deep breath. No sense turning this into a mud sling. Everyone is upset about the proposals. Perfectly fine to feel frustrated, it’s just expressing the frustration that leads things away from a solution.

You're right, the proposals are nothing to be upset about but some sure seem strung as tight as piano wire about it.

I was pretty upset with myself, however, for pulling the trigger on this bull when I bumped into 2 6 point the same size (not a thin dimes worth of difference between them) and a 5 point. I should have known better than to even be there that day, although in fairness, it does hold some good whitetail bucks. But, elk are in there quite often as well.

Sucked having to spend a day and half lugging 200 pounds of burger meat and dust collecting rack off the hill. If a guy is going to be upset about something, wasting time messing with elk while the deer hunting conditions are perfect is it.

Man if that's the "grand compromise" I'd sure hate to see what putting the boots to nonresidents looks like.

I feel like definition of compromise must be different in wyoming.
Can’t wait to see what the new NR tag costs will be since we made up around 70%+ of fees and just cut tags a loot for NR. Appreciating NR DIY hunters to the fullest.

If that goes through, non-resident hunting in Wyoming will be done as we know it unless you are willing to pay for an outfitter. Sure glad I have gotten in a good 35 years of elk hunting.
Ya I guess there’s a bright side to everything. I’m also just glad I got in the game when I was a physically fit age 35, and was lucky to experience some of the best hunts on the planet before it all ended. Now at age 62 I got another wheel falling off every year. This time a partially torn Achilles. The writing is on the wall. DIYers are not welcome. Please go away.

Bailed and burned big 5 points years ago, and exited those systems. Burned my deer & lope points several times over. So only got 8 elk points at risk with this welfare BS. Plan is to share those with a friend to burn on general next season, but my guess is many will be jumping in that same boat. Will be kinda like trying to find a seat in one of the Titanic’s life boats.

I wonder how their residents feel about not being able to hunt in neighboring states. Because that’s where all this is headed.

I quit Montana 5 years ago after a crappy overpriced overcrowded elk hunt, and never looked back. Glad I chose not to buy into their point scheme. That’s not going well! Will see how bad this gets in WY. But I’m old and can afford to walk. This would slam the door on newbies trying to form a strategy from the ground floor. Except for the wealthy ones with disposable incomes.

I'll continue to text and talk to a guy on the TF to see what NR's can do. Regardless what happens, I'm a NR who is grateful to hunt in Wyoming. It brings me together with my buddies to experience great times and make memories. And if we're fortunate, have a Wyoming surf & turf dinner every fall.

Residents of Wyoming have enough hunting to not have to worry about neighboring states.

Although the republican party in Montana was nice enough to pass a law to allow me NR elk, deer, upland bird, and fishing licenses OTC and for half price of what most nrs pay. Sort of a cross between class warfare and socialism...but I'll take it, and greedily.

This is atrocious. We all knew that as soon as residents went for 90/10 DEA that outfitters would demand a huge set aside as part of the agreement. Outfitters and WY resident hunters can agree on one thing, eliminate DIY NR hunters as much as possible.
Sorry man but not all residents want to do away with DIY NR hunting, too broad of a brush there .

As mentioned, no matter to me. I’ve cashed all my WY points, save elk, which will burn next year. Had more than my share of hunts. Plus was fortunate to buy the last LL in Illinois 2006 for a whopping $190. So I get $17 buck tags every year for life, along with all other resident benefits (1/35th NR prices). Coming in very handy since moving to Indiana in 2019. IN has great low taxes & fantastic public turkey hunting, but the deer management is horrible, due to long rut gun seasons. Wouldn’t deer hunt public here if you paid me! 😂

Very pleased to have planned ahead in Wyoming, and be in prime position to burn those 8 elk points on general prior to the outfitter welfare kicking in. If we don’t draw in 2023, we will in 2024.

I apologize for needing the clarification but what impact would the new proposed split have on the gen tag numbers for NR? Am I missing something or would this mean that there would be more general tags available for NRs? @BuzzH would you mind clarifying if I am missing something?

By regulation nrs receive 7250 full priced elk tags. Going from memory nrs get about 3000 or so lq elk tags. Leaving another 4000 or so general tags.

90-10 would mean around 1500 lq 5500 general tags. Under the grand compromise, half of the general tags would go to outfitters.

Wasn't there something about regions for elk for nr and lifting that cap. Or was that something different?

Yes...and it's fantasyland that the GF would increase nr general tags by 1000.

There could possibly be less nr general tags issued in some regions or, most likely the additional general tags would be given in areas with mostly private land, think unit 6.

I'm not opposed to nr region general elk. Makes sense management wise.
