So a hunting partner of mine was first in line at a vendor this morning when tags went on sale, during the chaos the archery “A” tag was coming up unavailable, unavailable unavailable so he opted for the “B” tag rifle rather than no tag at all, I was just curious if there is anybody out there that has an a tag for sawtooth zone that wouldn’t mind trading for a rifle tag , season starts oct 15,

He has already talked to fish and game and they said his best bet would be to find somebody with an A tag that would trade , thanks fellas

Man he must have gotten there early. There were people camped at the fish and game office for 2 nights waiting in line. Also a good buddy of mine went to a vendor and was there at 2:30 a.m. with 4 people in front of him and was unable to grab a tag. Luckily, our whole group was able to snag them online. Glad it looks like fish and game will make it a controlled hunt next season. It is madness.

Also, it is weird that the b tag came up available and the a did not. My buddy could have gotten the a as the vendor system where he was at showed available but the b showed unavailable.

It was nuts in Moscow too. I was fourth and didn’t get the tag.

Got it online though! Beyond thrilled.

I agree, should be a drawn tag.

I can't understand what all the popularity is about. It's a fine zone as far as OTC zones go but not special by any means, based on quality and quality of elk. The deer numbers in the zone are pretty low, as well.

Went deer hunting in the zone last year with no intentions of joining the bandwagon for elk, but holy cow did we see a lot of bulls while it was open. Had to give it a go at least one year. Probably won't be applying unless it is phenomenal, I just dont like the way tags are distributed as not everyone is able to sit in line or go on a computer to get a tag in the middle of the week.

Hey mods , could we delete this thread please thank you
Because you don’t want to draw more attention to the unit(s)?? I believe IDFG has done an incredible job hyping a general zone tag by sending everyone 16 emails a year about it!! How many email blasts do they send out a year about the pioneer or beaverhead zones?? ...maybe they’re next?? :)
Go get em IDMTS!!

I agree with you. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about regarding this zone. I haven't been there in a number of years but on numerous occasions we saw more wolves than elk/deer. And if we didn't see wolves, we definitely heard them. Hopefully that's changed since the last time I was there, but that was enough for me to not ever go back.

Glad to hear you guys saw animals...it's been a while since I've hunted in there but we drew a muzzy deer tag a while back and saw/heard wolves daily. Watched a herd of elk in the bottom of a canyon and once the wolves started howling, the elk looked right to where the wolves were and got out of there faster than I've ever seen. It was unbelievable to see the elk's reaction. That was close to 12 years ago though...but it was enough for me to not ever go back!

If your bow hunter ed didn't transfer over to the new system then it won't make archery hunts available for you to purchase online or through a vendor. I had the same problem A tag was not available but B tag was. I had to call IDFG and have them re enter my bow hunter ed certificate number then it was available.
