10 miles today. 5 with the dog this morning, then 5 more (and 2200' of climbing) with my eight year old boy at a local trail event. I'm going to have to keep training to keep up with that kid. I was getting smoked on the downhill runs.
My "kid ruck" workout this weekend. Took the kids for a hike down to the river, 2 miles each way, almost 2000' of elevation loss on the way in, 2000' gain on the way back. Load one 28# 2 year old in the backpack, add 2 Nalgenes of water and metric s#%ton of snacks. Pack weight around 35#ish. Let the 4 year old set the pace, and decide how far to hike. Make it to the river. 4 year old (who skipped and ran all the way down hill) develops a "stomachache" when it comes time to climb back up the hill. Fireman carry a 45# 4 year old on the front, with a 2 year old adding a "dynamic move" on my back by rocking side to side to see if she can make daddy lose his balance. Definitely felt like I had been schlepping elk quarters when I was done....
For time:
21 double DB power cleans (50#)
21 ring dips
42 double-unders
15 double DB power cleans (50#)
15 ring dips
30 double-unders
9 double DB power cleans (50#)
9 ring dips
18 double-unders
So there's this finger ridge I've been eyeballing for some time, thinking I could possibly carve a route up to the top (vs the trail that goes up there). Today I decided to give it a whirl with Tiny Elvis in toe (or me in toe?). It started pretty decently, little bit of a use trail/game trail winding it's way- steep, but straightforward. Slowly but surely we got into more and more rock. I had taken my spikes off because of the rock (spikes on rocks = no bueno!), but still found plenty of ice and snow where it would have been advantageous to have them. Would have taken forever swapping them on and off, so just left them off.
We'd hit some impassable rock and would then work our way to the north sidehililng until we could see a chute leading up. Rinse and repeat several times.
We made it to the top, but it was neither elegant or easy. Now I know and won't have to worry about trying it again
6 miles (1500' of climb all in the first 1.5 miles).
