When you're ready for a red varietal which will rock your world, find a bottle of shiraz by Mollydooker. Entry level is The Boxer. Step up big time to Blue Eyed Boy or man-up and get a bottle of Carnival of Love. Special occasion stuff.

Red wine guy here....though I don't drink nearly as many as I used to. I live near Napa...so I'm spoiled....I can't drink a crummy red anymore.

There are some excellent wines available at good prices....you just have to know how to find them.

First, you need to know the flavor profile your wife likes. So for example, does she like Pinot, Cab etc...and then you need to know her preferences- bold/ light, fruit forward...that type of thing.

For example; I prefer Cabs that are bold...with a flavor profile of dry with Cassis flavors. I don't like light weak Pinots. So I look for my flavor profile and am rarely disappointed.

Once you know all that, download the Vivino App for your phone. Then go to the discounters; Costco, Sams, or the discount liquor and you snap a pic of the label and it gives you an instant rundown on ratings, flavor profile etc. You can find wines that are in the top 5% in the world...for under $20....sometimes $12-$14.

I could give you specifics wines...but this^ is the best strategy.

if you like Malbecs..try an Aglianico out of Italy. also a fantastic wine with a great price point.

knowing my ass from a hole in the ground, i would bet they are similar grapes from a different region. (like a Merlot)

Yeah, what I’ve learned so far is it’s a grape that was prominent in Cohars then taken to Mendoza and flourished.

I’m telling you, this shit is a deeper rabbit hole than reloading.

More fun too.

Yeah, no doubt. The problem with wine is an evolution. If you are happy with the cheap stuff...don't ever drink a really good bottle.....you will never like the cheap stuff again.

I don't agree with the comment "Anything over $20 you are just paying for the label". I have had some expensive wines that were truly amazing. Do you really think folks are just buying grand cru Mouton Rothchild for the label?

I've had the pleasure of drinking one of those and the finish went on for a full minute with the flavors changing along the way. $20 bottles can't do that. I've done work in Napa and received some great gifts of incredible reds......[beer too from the Gordon Biersch guys!]

I had some pinots recently on lesser known central CA appellations south of Paso Robles that were world class for sure- a great wine destination right around Solvang. Try a Belle Glos Cable and Telephone Pinot and it will blow away French Burgundies and wreck you for the cheap stuff.

I do think that having a source for legit advice is key; that Vivino App strategy is a killer way to find good wines...though I wouldn't buy direct from them.

I think the $20 comment was probably a bit tongue in cheek and more in reference to other local vineyards like his.

Have to give that app a try

Back when I drank the Devil’s Water I liked Coppola’s Claret and also Gabbiano Chianti.

Both are sub 15$ and better than most.

My wife prefers Pinot Noir as her strongest red, I like those and Cabs.
I will second the Belle Glos Pinots.
For another $20 Pinot Option, try Meomi.

once you taste wines by smaller labels like Buoncristiani and Ancien it will wreck you.

I'm sure^.......if my comment came off as Snarky it was unintended. [me a wine snob- well maybe! grin]

My point was more to the effect that there are some truly incredible wines out there that need to be tried to be believed....another level for sure. I think of it the same as seeing fine mortise and tenon carpentry....it takes that trade to another level.

Take her out. Call the restaurant and ask to speak to the Sommelier. This person knows the inventory and trained in pairing. Life's too short to read the menu from right to left but you can reserve the wine (and the meal for that matter) in advance or arrange for a wine tasting. Kinda makes it special and shows you care while giving you complete control over the expense. If ya really wanna wow her, rent a big white tent and have a caterer perform services in a beautiful and remote area. Candle light, a little music and one person serving everything is so cool.

Oh, I’ve got thicker skin than that. No worries!

I figure I gotta get my pallete a little better developed. A guy that’s only ever shot a Daisy Red Ryder can’t really appreciate a Holland and Holland.

Need some help from the local Wino's. My wife's birthday is coming up and she enjoys wine on occasion with dinner. Do any of you recommend a wine club or bulk (case) variety to get as a gift? She opens a bottle many once a week. It seems that she prefers red's, but also drinks blended wine too. So, does anyone know a company or site who offers variety cases? Or is a club membership the way to go?
Viansia winery in nape has a great wine club. They only sell that way or at the winery. Great wine. Especially their reds.
