Will Nightforce Ever Offer A Hunter-Friendly Reticle Again?

I would like to try the 4x16 atacr but am worried about seeing the reticle on low power in hunting conditions. Never looked through one but the reviews didn't look promising.

Can someone articulate the downsides of the MOAR 30 as a hunting reticle for me? I've hunted with it exclusively for the past 5+ seasons and don't see a problem. I'm guessing this is a case of "I don't know what I don't know." It has a clear aim point, it has subtensions for wind, what am I missing? I would delete the the elevation subtensions above the crosshairs if I could, simply because I don't use them, but otherwise I find it pretty usable. Thoughts?

I have the same - no issues hunting at all. I rarely use the illumination, even in lower light.

The FFP reticle is thin at 4x. It's usable as a crosshair at 6x but the hash marks are blurry until 8x for me.

Another issue with this scope is its heavy as shite.

That's a big reason I'm still hooked on the NXS 2.5-10. It checks a lot of boxes for a 20 oz package. I have 3 of them.

I have a NF NXS 2.5-10x32 that has a five circles for holdovers. I’ve never had an issue with this reticle on any magnification setting or in any light. I don’t use these circles for anything but calling out corrections as I dial 99% of the time for anything over 225yds.

I hunted with NF’s awhile and still use them on some hunting rifles. Theres nothing wrong with the reticles for most hunting situations where you have to shoot in legal light. Down south we’re I’m at game seasons are long and your hunting something year round from varmints, pigs, Nilgai, axis, black buck and several other exotics that you aren’t required to shoot in full daylight. Also even during hunting season it can be very hot so most animals don’t even think about moving until after legal shooting light in the evenings some days. I was missing out on several shooting opportunities with cross hairs made up of .125” line subtensions. Sometimes I could use the illumination but it only had one brightness setting.

Switching to a March MTR 5 reticle with a .5” center dot where only the dot illuminates and has 6 brightness settings was a game changer for me in low light, low power hunting situations. Also the reticle is not to cluttered. You can hunt with it in just moonlight at night.

I’d like to find a FFP scope with large reticle subtensions. But so far I’m not a fan of FFP in low power low light hunting situations although you can make it work.

These are just preferences for my situations but to clearly answer your question for me it was the thin cross hair sub tensions and only having one brightness setting.

I dont dial. Boo me now! I like the SHV with the duplex. I find alot of the reticles way too crowded with things I dont use or need. Give me a duplex, SFP, and good glass and im happy.

I’ve shot a bunch of stuff with that basic plex SHV scope. It’s about heavy but it’s durable and reliable.

Up until a few years ago (2019ish?) NF made the 2.5-10nxs in both a duplex and a mil dot. They cancelled a bunch of sku’s, so it looks to me like they killed the exact reticles some people wanted, almost certainly because they werent selling. So its no wonder they dont offer these if those reticles didnt sell.
Also their reticles are the only reason I dont own a NF scope. Other than their duplex I find them universally too thin to use in conditions that are standard for me (dark, extremely busy background). But clearly what works isnt universal, between different conditions and different eyes. If I hunted from a stationary position or hunted mainly in the west Im sure their reticles would be fine. The S&B p3 reticle is about the best Ive found in a ffp scope, id buy a similar reticle in an nxs in a heartbeat.
