Why used prices on here so high?

Cmon fellas-new guy does have a point tho....how many items do you see that are used-well because regardless of the condition, it’s still USED, as in no warranty or ability to return-with asking prices darn near new! Then it gets bumped to the top to death, last price drop, etc....
If only some sellers would take a moment and see what CURRENT street prices are for new, and price it accordingly for their used item. I’ve been interested in more than a few times, and while looking up the item to read more about it, see it’s being sold used for more than new-this just clogs up the classifieds. But-I don’t let it bother me, because they will eventually figure it out.
An old timer once told me that my used car is worth what someone was willing to pay-NOT the sentimental price tag I’ve applied to it.
I personally stick to a 60% of retail guideline for selling used equipment. Even if it “never left my pack” 😜

I couldn’t disagree more, sure some stuff is listed too high but I think that is the exception not the rule.

Add taxes and shipping on to new costs, and then recalculate. What you’re saying is only 20% off is actually probably more like 30% off. The majority of stuff I have bought on here has been like new condition. You also have to factor in that as a seller you are probably going to be low-balled regardless of what you list for.

I see this everywhere, just go on craigslist and see to see what people ask for their junk. Everyone seems to think their used gear is somehow more special and more valuable than anyone else’s.

Both of those scopes are basically unobtainium so the prices make sense.

They aren’t any less obtainable than they were like 8 months ago. Maybe a better example is people dropping their asking price on XTR IIIs because cameraland is currently selling them for less new lol.

Like the OP I was thinking similarly. No I am not looking to buy a pair of $300 boots for a $1, but when something is used, it's used and I am unwillingly to pay almost new prices - I know someone will say buy used, and I will. It cracks me up that some sellers justify their prices but mentioning how much the sales tax would be for a potential buyer. IMO sales tax should not be factored in, you paid the tax when you bought it and this shouldn't be factored in. There still are places that don't charge sales tax & there are 5 or so states that don't pay sales tax.

I am obviously new here too, and no I didn't join for yard sale prices in the classified section. The classifieds when decently priced are a bonus. I came for the wealth of knowledge on here, to learn from others that have a ton of experience. This has been a great source of information for me and thank you all for the time you put into making this forum one of the best!

If the used price is too high, it won't sell.

On the rare occasion I sell something in the classifieds I want it sold in 72 hours and shipped within 12 hours of receiving payment. If it doesn't move I may lower price or just keep it like 5 Miles if the offers don't warrant the shipping effort and cost.

Ive only purchased a handful of items on the classifieds - but I have my own criteria before I do that.

1) It must be an item I need [not want]

2) Detailed research on the price point of the item [new v. used v. reconditioned]

I may have paid a little more than I would have on eBay or something, but I also figured Id help a fellow outdoorsman out

Its a free market and people can price things however they see fit. Sometimes I need money, sometimes I do not. The way I price things is according to that.

The number one fallacy that buyers make is that they think because someone is selling something, they need money.

I also find it ironic that this is like the third thread regarding this in the last 18 months and I have yet to see a single seller post a thread bitching that people aren't willing to pay the asking price.

I always start high because everyone wants to haggle. You can price stuff 90% off retail and every single time they will ask for another dollar off.
This right here. I have had people try and talk me down on pricing because they can buy it brand new from XX store, when the item I am selling is also brand new.

It should be factored in because that is what it would cost the buyer to buy it new from a store. So if an item with sales tax cost the buyer 200 bucks and I am selling it for 100, that is a 50% discount. Why should the seller have to price it lower?

Rokslide is a pretty efficient marketplace so the “spread” between new and classifieds is relatively low: sellers are mostly trusted to deliver goods as advertised because reputation is valued... This is a good thing.

Except no sales tax in my state.

Simple answer is if the price is wrong it won't sell. Whoever wants can put whatever price they want on anything. If the price doesn't work for you move on.

Used classifieds on any message boards are driven by what people are willing to pay for items. Ive sold firearms and accessories on arfcom....fishing rods and reels on bloodydecks....truck parts on coloradofans. People price how they want and if it's too high, the market will reflect that by not buying. I try to research similar items, then price mine lower than the others. I'd rather not sit on crap and just get it out the door....and I usually do....quickly.
When I see things priced higher than what I think they should be....I chuckle and move on....it is what it is.

Then you can price your items lower as your input costs are lower and they should sell quicker.

I've found it to be a mixed bag. I've gotten some great deals here. And I've seen some prices that make me shake my head. I think a lot of folks build in room for negotiation. Personally, I don't haggle. I either like the price and buy it or move on. If a price is "too high", it just won't sell. If it did sell, then the price by definition wasn't too high.

I agree wholeheartedly with moving on from a price that isn’t agreeable.

However, let’s say a seller is listing it at 90% of the retail price-for example $90 instead of $100, I personally do not find a measly $10 discount is worth it to me.

First of all, the item is USED-if it weren’t, the seller would simply return it.
Secondly, there is a risk buying from an unknown person, and then you factor in YOUR ability to return the item for a full refund, or have a warranty on the item, and the item is truly brand new, 10 bucks isn’t worth all that!

For me-that risk/reward falls at 60% of retail of buying used, but in fairness most gear I buy new is discounted.

*Then there is another whole factor of some who abuse the pro purchase program and are constantly selling items that they got for 30-40% off and are trying to turn a dime, abusing a system meant as an appreciation to MIL/LEO guides etc.
