Why the huge increase in Idaho NR hunters?

I understand being frustrated with losing out on second tags. However there seems to be a lot of frustration with having non residents period. You should love having those tags sell. They provide almost all of the revenue with minimal impact to the elk. Think about it by percentages. Residents are typically going to be successful 30-50% of the time on average. Some more some less. Non residents without a guide maybe 10% on average. Wisconsin sold more than 50,000 non resident tags for deer and the success rates for public land hunting for them is very low. Average person just won't find animals with little to no scouting. Where I as a resident fill all 4 of my tags every year. I think predator control has to be one of the biggest failings in Idaho. We are finding that out here too. They released a bunch of wolves here in the very northern units a decade ago. Now we have huge packs running around over half the state and the northern units have almost no deer left.

I doubt many people are upset about losing on second tags.

Minimal impact to elk population, not elk hunting though. The hunting sucks when the whole country floods one area.

It's the people who are salty about zone caps and price increases that are being goofs, I don't think hardly anyone has said there shouldn't be NR hunters. Some people are moaning because they can't all funnel into one area and stand on each other, those people need to shut up. Same for those crying about price increases, considering how cheap Idaho was to start with.

My opinion, worth what ya paid for it.

Sounds good. Still 1621 tags left still not sold out. In reality does it matter either some one buys one or they don’t . Still the same amount of nr tags as years past
I believe they ended up with a little lower # overall as well due to the caps.

It definitely matters. The tags are selling much faster than they ever have. Having Idaho OTC in your back pocket when you’re on the bubble for drawing somewhere else isn’t a possibility anymore. This thread is about an increase in hunters wanting Idaho elk tags. Selling out tags in a few weeks, that didn’t sell out before the season started just a few years ago definitely constitutes as an increase. . .

Yep Idaho is no longer the fall back . So now you either shit or get off the pot. 12815 is 12815 that number does not change . Even when residents were buying second tags that number never changed. So the noticeable increase is not in non residents it is in the population explosion in residents. Or as the two residents I hunted with this year say f@“$ing Californians

I’m hoping to find a place to hunt as a NR. Living in Texas makes it nearly impossible to hunt since I don’t own any land. Wish there wasn’t such a negative connotation associated with NR hunters. Granted I know some people do it for popularity, there is still a good number of hunters that want to take part in the harvest and have good quality protein taken from field to plate.

That seems to be the biggest issue. I can understand how residents get irritated when they hear non res whine "looks like I'm going to Idaho" with disdain.

The guys at GOHUNT seem to be super pissed about it in the video they posted, I guess he didn't get the special tag he wanted. Kind of ironic since GH has messed up NR hunting anyways.
I personally enjoy watching the subscription services, YouTubers, instagrammers, etc. get upset over stuff like this. Reap what ya sow.

Where did it say that. I read it was same exact amount just spread out. 12815 same as always

You are correct. I saw someone elsewhere totalled the caps and came up with a lesser # but later corrected themselves.

Same total # of nr tags.

Just wait, those Cali people moving there by the thousands per year will soon become tens of thousands per year...or more, and it wont be long before they start their liberalism there, shutting down your gun ranges, lobbying for less and less hunting opportunities.....etc etc, just like they did in areas of Arizona. Enjoy it now folks.

It’s surely coming.... 10 years from now, these will be known as “the good ole days”☹️

It can only happen if the populace is complacent. Guaranteed there are more long term Idahoans than California transplants.

Such a bummer that I can’t hunt Idaho in 2021. My unit sold out on me last year too. I used to always wait almost up to the hunt before buying an archery elk OTC tag. Crazy how social media has changed things. I’m a NV resident and our state doesn’t ever issue tags so hunting Idaho each year was a treat. If I didn’t have middle and high school kids at home, I’d move to another state with more hunting opportunities. Won’t be long before only the rich will be able to hunt big game.

Nevada doesn’t have any big game seasons? I thought I have seen a bunch of deer killed there? People will just have to prioritize or hunt their home state. I would say their is plenty of opportunities to hunt it’s just not what people are envisioned how or what they are hunting

There have been some very important topics covered here. The reality is, that things will probably never be like they were, or are. Isn't this how our entire culture is shifting? Dont get me started.

On the one hand, you cannot blame people for wanting to be here....on the other hand, present allotments and game management is going to have modify to accurately accommodate these changes. Honestly....I cannot see the management part of this equation remaining as it is. I am not here to slam Fish and Game but there have been some major governmental blunders. Most
pre eminently, the reintroduction of the wolf; a living nightmare. Now...a virtual human population explosion. Time for the higher ups to get it figured out. Idaho is better than most as Ive seen that they do listen to the hunters. Or at least act like they do
