I started shooting trad three years ago when my uncle gifted me an old 80's Darton recurve. I've been a compound shooter for thirty years. Its grown into a passion over the last few years. I made it my goal to get proficient enough to hunt with my longbow, and this season is the season I do it.

This past weekend, I did my first 3D shoot with my recurve (Sanlida Hermit x10). 30 targets, various distances, shooting instinct. I shot pretty damn good. About 40% were good clean kill shots (heart/lungs), two complete misses, and the rest were marginal shots (liver/spine/shoulder/guts). I learned that I have better focus when shooting at an animal shaped target. It seems like I can zoom in on the heart. Shooting blocks and bags just doesn't give me the same focus. That might sounds like BS, but that's just how my eyes and mind like to work.

I shoot my 45# Oberon longbow better than my Sanlida. So my plan is to hit every 3D shoot I can find from now until the season opens mid-September. I'm excited for the journey to culminate. A deer harvest would be a delightful bonus.

I'll post updates along the way. Wish me luck. I hope some of you join me on this journey.

Good luck man! I shot trad a few years ago and killing an animal with it was one of the most satisfying things I have ever done, considering how much effort I put into it. I wish you the same success. 👊

I’m pretty sure I’m throwing myself back in the ring this year too. As it stands, the 2 years I hunted with a recurve, I missed 6 bulls, furthest was 18yds, and I was shooting well… until I had a live target

I guess I missed the feeling of wanting to throw my bow at an elk, so I’m going to do it again, as long as my shooting is on point

I sold my blacktail and stalker and bought a 19” P2P riser and medium 45# yangis, but just got it all put together so I can start shooting volume every evening. Still getting an arrow dialed in, and the bow in general, I slowed way down shooting my recurve the past couple years, and then started shooting again a few months ago and resparked my interest

WF19 with DAS 3K meds, 50 # shooting off hump - WF21 with Nika N3 PROGRESS 48# med , shooting a pat Norris #25 springy . Champion custom Mississippi built strings . Tons of arrows, single string accessories, equipment some stuff I have not even opened packages boxes yet too try . Bitten by the bug years ago . Got it bad . Might as well mention three under , tab shooter only hunt . Rod Jenkins Safari Tuff tab n AAE ELITE cordovan tab as a backup. When you's get dialed in , you hunters practice taking some shoots off your bare fingers, in case you lose your tab or forget it , or your glove in the wild extreme frontier land . Almost forgot this near 70 old man here , keeps both eyes open when shooting. Wish ya the best men ! .......
