Looking at carrying one of the Mossberg's Nightstick for Grizzly protection during bow season. Not much confidence in spray or my ability to remain calm and get off a good shot on a charging Grizzly but I can pump a shotgun and scatter slugs or double 00 buck shot. What's everyone think anyone doing this?

I’m not an expert, but if I’m on the wrong end of a bear attack, I think a CNS/brain hit is what would stop the attack.

Whatever would give me the best chance for that is what I would want.

Best of luck shooting that accurately under extreme duress especially with a hard cast slug. Grizzly are a 3D target moving at about 30 mph.

Az hunter, that's why buckshot sounds good how many can accurately shoot a pistol at something coming at 30 mph I know I can't. But I'm pretty sure I can dump Buckshot and slugs but who knows just putting this out there to get opinions thx...

Take a look at this post:

Take look at the patterns and actual size of the patterns. Compare them to a grizzly bear’s head and body (frontal).

Then understand the photos are of shots not taken under duress and not shooting at a bear moving at 30 mph.

Consider where you likely would hit if charged and assess if that would kill the bear instantly, turn the charge, or just tick it off.

You still have to practice putting your bow away, unshouldering the shotgun, taking the safety off, locate and face the threat, point the shotgun at the bear, and get a solid shot off. 3 seconds equates to surprising the bear at 30 yards.

Compare that to getting bear spray into play.

Low odds event.

Buckshot is commonly dead soft roundballs, they don’t penetrate worth a damn. I have seen problem bears shot with buckshot, it works okay at distances where the multiple projectiles can’t spread enough to help your hit probability, past that it sucks.

Get a reliable handgun and a good comfortable holster. Buy a bunch of ammo and practice. Most anything else is going to be ineffective or inconvenient.

Perhaps a Howda type double barrel in a chest mounted holster, loaded with Remington 8 pellet reduced recoil OO when this ammunition was shot out of a mod choke Remington 870 with a 20 in. Barrel at a distance of 25 yards it retained a baseball size group. And yes it was copper plater hard lead shot,There is a lot of ifs in this scene like can you draw and fire single handed with control and recovery for the second shot do you know and practice tactical movements (not so much useful during the first shots) but after that and the re-load situation, interesting situation might want to watch the Lion charge in the movie out of Africa when Redford tells Streep re-load, after the second lion charges. Another good charge is the movie the ghost and the darkness. Yes these are lion not bear charges but the pretense and actions needed for the charge and after the charge are similar. And yes practice practice when I was in the riot control position we practiced minimum twice a week minimum 50 to 75 rounds each session this included situational awareness and most important the tactical movements.Happy hunting.

I think if I was going to carry a long gun it'd be like a 45/70 with solids...just cuz I want one. If I'm gonna get rag dolled around might as well have a cool gun in my hands in case my buddy is recording...

I'm not a bowhunter but I would think bino harness bear spray/pistol combo would be the way to go...and is my griz country 1st choice. Bear spray for when you have a little time to pre-emptively strike with a couple "hey bears!" and the gun for the sudden charging, I just stumbled up on one times...my body will probably will be found with both the spray and gun still in their holsters... :ROFLMAO:

Forgot why in the world I recorded this...but there it is, a stupid video right in there with all the other stupid shiz I record...? :ROFLMAO:

The odds of just stumbling up on such a big obvious animal seem pretty low... ;)
