What was underwhelming about it?
There wasn't anything there that was unique to the event or couldn't be accomplished elsewhere. In other words, there wasn't value in attending that exceeded the cost of attending.

Really the best part was 45min-1hr of listening to Travis and Robby.

They need a genuine hook;
Stash a bunch of 3d targets in the weeds to the north and set up a glassing area where people can take advantage of Maven/Swarovski/Zeiss in attendance.
Rent some stair masters, bring in ALL the pack makers and make it a point to encourage people to try them all with weight and real effort.
Give away door prizes.

...something other than here's the same stuff you can see at stores in Denver, but drive to the airport and pay us.

Personally I see value in everything being in one stop. If I want to look at a product, I prefer it to be at an expo where I can talk to someone who's hopefully more knowledgeable on the product than just a store salesman.

Then I'm not wasting someone's time on a product that I might or might not buy in their store.

Who on the exhibitor list would you talk to there rather than at their place of business?

What do you mean? Your list shows a huge list of exhibitors and 90-95% aren’t local to Denver. Are you suggesting flying to every exhibitors place of business to talk to owners, engineers and employees of products?

Being able to play with a product and ask questions is invaluable to would be buyers.

Look at the international sportsman’s expo, there’s no 3d targets hiding in the grass outside and it brings in hoards of people. And 99.9% of it is pure junk.

I think year 1 was a wild success and you’re the first person who was Debbie downer about it. I’m optimistically hopeful it continues to grow! The western hunt expo was a lot of fun, but traveling out of state for it isn’t something I’d do yearly.

I was actually just at a shoot that has several of the same manufacturers.

I much prefer to talk to the manufacturers directly. They know the products way better than a place that ses them generally.

I was able to talk to with the guy in the Shibuya booth for a while. He seemed very interested in suggestions I had on little possible improvements on their sight. Don't know that you are gonna find those sights around Denver, or really most any where besides mail order.

Or Maven's, I'm pretty certain their business model isn't to stock them in stores.

Those were 2 I just spoke with, let alone if I was interested in other products from something like a firearms manufacturer that isn't going to be available to look at, like GunWerks, The Best of The West, etc.

Let alone all of conservation organizations to meet.

What metric(s) are you using to gauge success?

You know I'm not suggesting that one fly around the country. You don't know how to communicate with a business owner/employee/engineer?

If I'm suggesting anything, it's that I can't accomplish anything at that show as a consumer that I can't any other business day for less time or money.

You don’t find value in holding a piece of equipment you are considering buying? The vast majority of my Amazon returns are because I bought something that on paper seemed great but in real life didn’t live up to expectations. I can think of multiple items I currently own (high end) that I wouldn’t have bought if I had played with it first.

For example, the baby swaro spotter. I’d never have considered buying one because I had a baby spotter that I hated. But after playing with it and looking through it, I think it’s a great piece of equipment.

Oh and I think I gauge success like any other half way intelligent person. Feedback from people that went and continued growth. How would you measure it?

Both you and I can go to multiple places, closer places, any business day, for free, and take that spotter outside, multiples days to experience different weather/light. That's the point...great example.
