I hear/read these suggestions quite frequently.Any competent gunsmith local to you should be able to do it.
My questions is, how does someone evaluate the competence of a gunsmith they have never used?

When I was looking for a competent gunsmith I used Facebook and got on my cities FB community page. I was able to find a pretty good gunsmith fast to cut a barrel for me. Granted this was from the same guy being recommended over and over. Samething the OP is doing here just more centralized to their area.I hear/read these suggestions quite frequently.

I'll second this - quick turnaround at a great priceMilwaukee
My local guy says “I’m about 8-10 months out, but just dropped it off and I’ll try and work it in.You don't have a single good gunsmith locally or within an hour drive? Cutting, crowning, and threading a barrel is basic gunsmithing. If they have a lathe, more times than not, they should know what they are doing.
Yeah sounds like all the local construction guys here in NW FL. "I'm working on a million dollar home. I'm X months out" then you see them on the local FB pages two weeks later whining that they don't have enough work.My local guy says “I’m about 8-10 months out, but just dropped it off and I’ll try and work it in.
I’m building comp rifles for people all over the country.”![]()
I've had local smith deny me work on my Howa Mini too. The main reason is because they didn't want to do a relief cut in the barrel to have the barrel removed. Utter laziness in my opinion.I’ve had locals gum smiths refuse to work on a Howa mini. Others that have done work I had to purchase a tap to correct their poor workmanship. Kampfeld has two of mine currently and will have all of mine for the foreseeable future.
Cut and crown only or do you want it threaded? Brownells sells the hand tools to crown a barrel if you have any interest in doing it yourself and aren’t looking to have it threaded.Who have you successfully used in the past to cut and recrown a Tikka barrel?

Literally any machinist can handle that. Threading and false shoulder work needs a bit of a competency check.Cut and crown only.
