Who to cut and recrown a Tikka Barrel?

I hear/read these suggestions quite frequently.

My questions is, how does someone evaluate the competence of a gunsmith they have never used?
When I was looking for a competent gunsmith I used Facebook and got on my cities FB community page. I was able to find a pretty good gunsmith fast to cut a barrel for me. Granted this was from the same guy being recommended over and over. Samething the OP is doing here just more centralized to their area.

You don't have a single good gunsmith locally or within an hour drive? Cutting, crowning, and threading a barrel is basic gunsmithing. If they have a lathe, more times than not, they should know what they are doing.
My local guy says “I’m about 8-10 months out, but just dropped it off and I’ll try and work it in.
I’m building comp rifles for people all over the country.”🙄

I’ve had locals gum smiths refuse to work on a Howa mini. Others that have done work I had to purchase a tap to correct their poor workmanship. Kampfeld has two of mine currently and will have all of mine for the foreseeable future.

Yeah sounds like all the local construction guys here in NW FL. "I'm working on a million dollar home. I'm X months out" then you see them on the local FB pages two weeks later whining that they don't have enough work.

I've had local smith deny me work on my Howa Mini too. The main reason is because they didn't want to do a relief cut in the barrel to have the barrel removed. Utter laziness in my opinion.

Who have you successfully used in the past to cut and recrown a Tikka barrel?
Cut and crown only or do you want it threaded? Brownells sells the hand tools to crown a barrel if you have any interest in doing it yourself and aren’t looking to have it threaded.

I also have had Karl @ Kampfeld Customs do a few and he does great work. He can also do a 5/8- 24 on some of the sporter type barrels with a collar that blends in pretty slick.

Another vote for Kampfeld. What I like best about Karl is how easy/good he is at communicating (email, phone). Always very responsive and I’ll gladly ship my stuff to him vs my local smith who is too “busy” to get to emails…. And the quality of work at an extremely fair price makes it a no brainer for me

If I was cutting down a barrel and re-crowning, and it was a tikka lite barrel or any other sported barrel, I would have Kampfield do this as he did mine. Even if you dont use a suppressor, it's setup for 5/8-24 which is standard for just about any attachment. Or just leave the bead blasted thread protector on it.

I had Kampfeld cut two superlites to 18” thread them and add a flared adapter to one of them. Turned out great.

Looking at doing the same to mine. If you don't mind me asking, what's the ballpark price to get that done?

I had a 24" 308 barrel I wanted cut to 18" and threaded for a can. I called a local gunsmith wanting to support the locals as much as possible. When I asked about it he told me "a 308 will shoot terrible with that short of a barrel" and "you'll lose a bunch of accuracy".....that was when I decided to find someone else 🤷‍♂️

This thread popped up at the right time for me. I was about to drop off my 708 barrel at the local gunsmith, but checking out Kampfeld, I'm going to send it to Karl. He offers 5/8-24 on a sporter barrel with a shoulder for less than my local guy that was just going to do 1/2-28.

223 was threaded 1/2x28 with cut threaded and thread protector was $125

270 was threaded 1/2x28, was cut, threaded, flared adapter with thread protector was $185
