Who shoots grouse with a Ruger Mark IV?

Looking to pick up a .22lr pistol to use on grouse during archery season. Will be using a Rugged Oculus suppressor with it. Torn between the mk4 and a Taurus TX22. Anything I'm missing in either gun? The Taurus is cheaper and holds more rounds, but is it accurate enough for headshots?

I’ve had a scoped MKII since they were first sold. Use it all the time as a squirrel gun. It’s great fun. Thought many times about suppressing it but never have. Probably should someday. Know nothing about the Taurus.

Shot lots of them with a 22 revolver. No big deal. Just make sure you did some practice. I hate losing birds.

I really prefer a silenced 22 rifle to swat down grouse and ptarmigans and stuff like that.

I would rather have the ruger mark 4 hunter though I have no experience with the Taurus.

My mark 3 also is the only gun I've contemplated getting suppressed.

I have a mark 3? 22/45 its the cheaper slab side.
I can't hit the broad side of a grouse with that thing. I did all the trigger, reliability upgrades.
Still. Ugg

I shot a entire mag at a grouse last season at like 20 yards. Never nicked him.

I wouldn't even consider it unless you put a nice aftermarket upper on it with an optic.

Never hunted with it, but my 22/45/SilencerCo Warlock pairing with a red dot on it shoots really well. I think it’d serve you well. I haven’t done any of the accuracy upgrades to it.

I've shot a lot of grouse with arrows during elk season, and haven't broken an arrow yet. That's one of the reasons why strength and durability are right at the top of my requirements for arrows, along with consistency. I hate breaking arrows. As for accuracy, I'd use my bow every single time over my Mark IV, regardless of distance.

When I am home during September, that is my entire focus in the woods, shooting grouse with my Ruger MKIV, suppressed. My best day was six grouse out of on tree. My kid loves to shoot it as well, so I got him a MKIII of his very own. I looked at the Taurus, Glock and Buckmarks, and settled on the Ruger. Out to about 15yds I can stack rounds with it. The suppressor gets dirty after a day of shooting so it needs a regular cleaning, but that is the only con I have with it.

Run the ruger with really old checkmate suppressor. Biggest issue is just getting good subsonic ammo. Seems to come either in 700 fps or 1000 fps and the faster stuff just kills more reliably and cycles consistently. Next issue is I am running with 10mm on right hip and ruger on left side. During archery season will just use bow with impact collars and flu flu? fletching.

With good ammo i can consistently keep everything in 2" circle at 20 yds. Biggest issue with grouse is sight picture relative to sights, just not a lot of contrast especially when in shaded dark areas.

I shoot 80lb limbs with 540gr arrows. I fill my quota for grouse every year and break just as many arrows. I broke two this year hitting dirt. I use judo points. I've shot gold tips, black eagle, and easton. It doesn't matter... I'm not changing my bow setup for grouse and $20 a grouse isn't worth it. 🤣 After about two years the ruger will have paid for itself in comparison to arrows.

The biggest issue is how to carry a suppressed .22. A Taurus or glock would be easy to put a trigger guard holster on and throw it in the lid of my pack. I'm not sure they make one for a Ruger though.

Wow id think you could drop down to 60lb limbs and still get pass thru on grouse? 😃

One thing that makes me sad about the Ruger is the upper is the serialized item. Id really like a pac lite upper but I just can't bring myself to ffl it.

I put my Ruger MKIV in between the frame and the waist belt on my Mystery Ranch, I carry a G17 on my right, Ruger on my left. They are out of the way, but I can get to them with minimal effort. I have also tried to carry my Ruger in a holster on the left side of my bino harness and that is just too much for me.

I just picked up a Keltec P17 for this very purpose. It comes with a threaded barrel and it is the lightest .22 I could find. The online reviews I've seen are great. It does look and feel like a cheap kids toy gun. Will find out this week how it shoots.

lemme know how it does!

I have a few of the Rugers (MK II, MK III 22/45 lite, 2 MK IV Hunters 6 7/8" & 5.5") and a Taurus TX22.
Out of the box the MKIV's shot half the group size of the TX22. They all have heavy triggers that I don't like, so all my Rugers get Volqurtsen guts. On the Hunter 6 7/8 I have a Holosun red dot.
I don't pack them for grouse very much, I just use arrows, but I don't shoot too many with my bow. Our grouse season is 4 months long, so I have plenty of days to chase them with my O/U 28 gauge.

Pic is a 22/45 after I bought it new in 2019. Removed the rail, mounted the RDS, and replaced the trigger. It scales identical w/same grip angle and trigger LOP as my S&W 2.0 range pistol.

Not quite a Buckmark but crazy accurate and easy to shoot. IMG_7825.JPG
