Ruger American Ranch Gen 2 in 22 ARC, what can it do? A long term shoot, upgrade, and review.

Here are a few groups from my RAG2 ranch 22 ARC. I installed a timney trigger and am shooting suppressed. The pic rail was removed, degreased, and torqued to ~65 in lbs. Warne mountain tech scope rings 65in lbs at the base, 22 on the scope. Using a swfa 3-15 gen 2.

The new trigger made a huge difference. I first used the suppressor at the same time as getting a better rear rest so I’m unsure how much each contributed to better groups, but both factors helped.

The load is: 77 tmk, 29 grains staball match, peterson brass, coal 2.210, lands at 2.217, cci400 primers.

Velocity is uknown, I’m guessing around 2800 as sierra load data lists 3000 with 29.1 grains of staball match, so i estimated a reduction of 50fps for every 2” of barrel.

29.5 grains resulted in 2 ejector marks after 7 shots. One shot of 30 grains resulted in a cratered primer. 29 grains has had no signs of pressure (book max is 30.3).

It is a very fun gun. I may try to remove some surfaces as CoMtnMike mentioned. I also plan to follow a diy stock mod from BLJ.

Group 1 (ignore the 6CM 7 shot group).

COAL is 2.21 for that load? 2.217 seems awfully short to the lands. AR loads are mostly 2.25. You running the standard AR mags still?

Following along for results. Wife loves her little RAR in 6 ARC so I'm looking for some good low cost upgrades to keep her shooting over the summer.
I got a RAR in 22 ARC and 6mm ARC based on my wife's experience with her RAP Gen 2 in 22 ARC. Hopefully I'll be handing her one of these for her hiking rifle as the 22" barrel on her RAP makes the rifle wanting to spin on the sling when a suppressor is threaded on. She's 5'2" so it isn't hitting stuff overhead with it but the lack of balance that bothers her. The 16" barrels are much better balanced with a suppressor on it.

I’m running the AR mag since I haven’t spent time researching upgrades. I very much dislike it and am all ears if you have a recommendation.

I play it on the safe side with what I deem to be the distance to the lands since I seated my 6cm too far one time and, in the field, I had a bullet lodge in the lands and pull out of the case when ejecting a live round (it was my first load recipe and i got lucky and ended up emptying the powder, loading the empty case, and ejecting it fast and it held the bullet).

I have been using the sharpie method and coloring the bullet, then seating it and checking for marks from the lands. If I see any, then i color and seat a new bullet on a fresh load (to avoid using the same bullet and introducing an unexpected factor from a micro adjustment).

Prominent marks from the lands disappear around .01-.025” prior to me considering it the lands as i’ll keep going until the faintest of marks in the sharpie are gone.

It may be unnecessary but I figure if I’m getting good groups and can avoid another issue then I’m good to go. For the RAG2 22ARC, I probably used 8-10 bullets. Once the lands marks disappeared, I used another two bullets to validate the cutoff again.

A few other roksliders listed finding the lands at 2.233 and 2.238 with 77tmk’s. Sierra lists coal at 2.200 on their load data chart.

Yeah the 16" just balances so much better on the small frames. My wife uses a Polonuim K on her 6 ARC and it works great and still keeps the length down. The only thing I've done is put the Ruger high cheek piece on which she said was a good improvement. I really want to drop a trigger in it but she thinks it's fine. I don't think she knows what she's missing.

The basic Timney can be found for $100 to $110 online. If it shows to give better groups, it might be a worthwhile investment for her. I just buy stuff for my wife and call it whatever the closest non real holiday present. Flag day present ✅️ First Day of Spring present ✅️ International Woman's Day present ✅️ Just Google "What holiday is today" and boom, you have your day.

You can't turn down a present on a holiday that someone bought you... 😏

Yeah, a trigger swap is definitely worth it
