Who shoots grouse with a Ruger Mark IV?

A stock Ruger auto will do it's part if you can.

I shoot 80lb limbs with 540gr arrows. I fill my quota for grouse every year and break just as many arrows. I broke two this year hitting dirt. I use judo points. I've shot gold tips, black eagle, and easton. It doesn't matter...

I shoot 75lb with 500+ grain arrows at almost 33" draw. I shot a grouse that was sitting on a branch with a judo point one time and the arrow blew through (as they always do) and stuck 3" into an Aspen tree. Took me several minutes to dig out enough of the tree to be able to unscrew the arrow from the point.

My reasoning is that if arrows are breaking after passing through grouse and hitting rocks etc, then they're also breaking from hitting rebar and stakes etc on 3D targets, and breaking on elk too etc. Like I said, I hate breaking arrows.

But ya.......a .22 pistol will work just fine if it shoots well. I've pretty much given up on shooting grouse unless I'm on my way back to camp anyway.

Pic is a 22/45 after I bought it new in 2019. Removed the rail, mounted the RDS, and replaced the trigger. It scales identical w/same grip angle and trigger LOP as my S&W 2.0 range pistol.

Threads like this are making me feel like pistol hunting will be my next adventure to supplement the archery season. I posted a thread on Lion hunting with a pistol but reading this I may need to branch out - seems like too much fun to pass up and easy enough to carry.

I was actually toying with the idea of a higher end pellet gun pistol for grouse while archery elk hunting. I too am tired of busting arrows on grouse. I shoot a Prime Black 5, 70# at 29”. I’ve used judos, old broadheads, blunts. Damn near every single arrow I’ve ever loosed on a grouse has busted. I’ve shot black eagle Renegades and Spartans mainly. I just think it’s spitting those arrows out too fast for it. My recurve or longbow, I can shoot judo’s at cinder blocks and not bust an arrow lol

A suppressed 22 pistol is awesome for small game. I don’t hunt grouse but I hunt squirrels and rabbits and it’s very effective. I use a 22/45 MKIV with a tacsol paclite upper and TBAC 22 takedown can and have no problem hitting them at 50 yards.

Just use a HP bullet and not a LRN, it makes a big difference putting them down. The CCI subsonic cycles great in mine, is very accurate, and very effective on game.

I haven't shot a grouse with mine yet but it's plenty accurate with just iron sights. I can get clay pigeons at 40 yards with mine.

I went to the range today and shot a tx22, mark iv, and glock 44. The Taurus was suppressed (el Camino). None had any issues with ammo although the Taurus routinely didn't lock the slide back on last round. The Ruger felt the nicest in hand although the stock trigger reset felt super long. I shot the glock the most accurately even with crappy glock sights. Of course I think it's the most expensive by the time I figure out a red dot setup for the slide as well as a threaded barrel. I think I'm going to pick up the Ruger and maybe do some trigger work to it.

Have both a TX22 and a MK IV Hunter and Tactical. They are not even in the same class and barely in the same sport as each other. For the kind of hunting accuracy that you're looking for the Ruger wins hands down. Plus mine have been alot more reliable then the Taurus. The TX is a good trainer/pinker for a noob, which is what I picked mine up for (wife).

They are a lot of fun. My tikka t1x with cci sub sonic bulllets is amazing. With the cci quiet bullets, I only hear the bullet hitting.

I have a RDS on pretty much every handgun I own and carry pretty frequently. I guess it's something you get used to. I'm thinking a 1 or 2 moa one for this setup though. Most of my handguns are 5 or 6.

I want to go this route, but don’t use a RDS on any of my work pistols, so I don’t want to have to keep retraining myself to use one then the other every few months.

Does that mount screw right into the pre-tapped holes or does it require new holes?
