I had a Muley get up just as I started to touch his eye with my barrel. Had to shoot him again before he dove off a steep embankment.

Folks can learn from others before them, or reinvent every wheel. Reinventing every wheel is a harder way to live. Our grand dads poked eyes, as did their grand dads, and their grand dads. :-)

Yes, but then about any PH worth his salt will still check the eye after getting close.
Yes, couldn’t help but notice the Cape buffalo got lots of extra rocks thrown, poking, kicks, etc. before being pronounced dead.

The duiker, on the other hand, just walked up and grabbed him.

I primarily hunt whitetail living in Georgia and don’t worry about them too much, but the bear I just shot with my bow I made especially sure it was dead haha

I had a muley blink at me and go racing away when I was about 10 feet away. Had to shoot it again...

Just seems strange to walk up to something I shot and it is still alive.

Never did until after the time I dropped a deer, started to work gutting, got about 6 inches into opening him up when he decided he was getting up. Scared the crap outa me but was able to grab my gun and get another round in him just as he got his feet under him. I always poke now.

Had a whitetail I shot very very forward fall down and what I thought was expire. Walked up to him to grab his horns and drag him to the field opening. As I got about a step away he raised his head and looked directly at me. After I shit down both pant legs I drew my pistol and neck shot him. Needless to say never just walked up to an animal again after that.

I have a buddy who ended up hanging onto roots on top of a cliff from an elk he thought was dead.

I don't remember exactly how close he got before it came alive again and came after him, it was close. Like bow was set down and maybe a leg lifted.

He's a little more cautious now,but don't know which end he chooses to poke.
You’re such a liar. It was a sheep, not an elk, the leg was lifted and it definitely came alive.

Shot a whitetail buck mid body a bit back definitely got some guts. He hunched up and walked away slowly to a fenceline and crawled under a snapped off tree top. Gave him an hour and a buddy showed up to help load him up. We walked over crossed over the fence 5 ft from him with his eyes wide open looking dead to the world. Buddy says oh ya you can tell he's dead you just touch their eye and he reaches out with his hand and gets an inch from his eye and he jumps up and tries charging him but horn gets hooked on fence. Probably the most hilarious thing I've seen ever as my buddy is on his ass on the ground. Buck turns and lays down again 5' from where he was under the tree. We moved around him and I got an arrow in his heart and he jumped up again and tried to bolt straight at my buddy but his horns got stuck in the tree and he spun and died right there. Craziest thing I've seen and don't think I've laughed harder at the size of my buddies eyes.

I don't always. It is usually obvious if the animal is dead or not. But I always approach from the back opposite the legs .

There's an old story, & it may just be that - "an old story", about the guy that put his new Weatherby in a dead elk's horns & while he was setting up his tripod to take a selfie, the elk jumped up & took off - with rifle in tow! LOL
