About 30 years ago I shot this cow elk center mass through the lungs right behind the shoulder with a 175gr Partition. I followed the blood trail in the snow for quite a ways. Then I saw her head up on the other side of a blowdown about 50 yards in front of me. I aimed at her neck just below the head and fired. Her head flopped over and was down. I got up to her and there's this giant hole through her neck and looks like her head is hanging on by a strap of hide. And there's that hole through her ribs in a great spot.......but she is still trying to move. I put the gun up to her head and pulled the trigger. Finally, done.

Then I pull out my knife and start slicing her open. I cut about a foot toward her chest and she starts kicking. Holy crap. I quickly put two more rounds through her chest. My buddy and I are looking at each other and I said "I think this one is possessed". Compare that to a broadhead through the exact same spot the first bullet went through, and that elk is down and dead in under 30 yards and a few seconds.

I have never have and never will. It’s pretty easy to tell when an animal is dead. The only animals I poke are in the leg above the hoof and they are lying in a knock box. They are dead, we just poke them to see if their reflexes are done firing so we don’t get kicked when we pull them out of the box. 🤣

Just a habit now. I started off hunting wild hogs and learned to check them big boars. I cant say I ever had one come back to life but I never trusted them.

I used to, but then I realized it’s a foolish way to go. What if the animal is blind, can’t blink, or is really committed to playing opossum?

Now, I approach from the rear and use my barrel to give them a Texas Heart Check. Granted, this method is easiest with a sporter-profile barrel. Suppressors make it more difficult.

WTF!?
