Who hunts alone?

I almost only hunt alone. It’s a specialty treat when I get to hunt with someone else. I also feel like I get discouraged less when I have someone else who is relying on me to go over than next hill or glass for 20 more minutes.

Since my dad passed away, I hunt 100% alone for whitetails, I have a Marine Corps buddy who is like a brother we hunt out west together.

I used to hunt with partners quite a bit. No slam against them but I really enjoy my time hunting trips/day trips alone. Sure, when things go sideways or I may have bit off more than I can chew, partner sure is nice. BUT, something about the solitude that as I age, I really enjoy more and more. And when everything does work out, can't beat that feeling knowing you did it yourself.

Maybe we need to define "hunting with friends". In my world - together means we left the truck together. Most cases we walked or ride for a few miles. However, at some point, we reach a point of dispersion. At that point everone takes a differant ridge and hunts alone for the rest of the day only to eventually meet up at the point of dispersion at a predetermined time to go back to the truck together.

Under those rules, I really hunt alone closer to 90% of the time. Time spent partnered up and hunting like raptors is pretty much minimal.

I have hunted alone since day one of moving out west. I dont usually carry a gun and dont own any of the emergency devices. My wife never knows where I am. Its a risk I'm willing to take for now. I just stay within my capabilities and dont pretend I am invincible. As I get older I am more careful and I will probably end up with an emergency device sooner or later.

Before kids came along I hunted almost all alone and was successful. I have tried getting my boy involved in hunting and he is either 110% committed or has entirely different sports he likes. Right now it is golf, so I will be back to hunting by myself. I wish him or my daughter would show an interest, but they currently don’t. I will continue hunting alone and will be taking along one packhorse for meat packing. And I Iike to take my one hound for a camp companion. I personally have better luck hunting solo.

I usually hunt “risky”. I don’t carry much for first aid, just some Tylenol and Benadryl. The only thing I carry is an inReach and a pistol, but I find myself in grizzly country at least 80% of the time, so I don’t want to mess around being completely out of touch because they can seemingly count from nowhere.

I scout with my dog but I usually hunt with my cousins. I wish I could big game hunt with my dog cause it'd mean I'd be out hunting more lol. Plus I like him a little more.

I have 2 buddies that went hunting together one day. One drove the ATV they were on over a cliff. The passenger was able to hike out and saved the driver’s life.

If the driver was alone he would be dead. If the passenger was alone he would have never gone over the cliff and likely had a normal day of hunting.

Hunting with someone else can be more dangerous than hunting alone.

With my inReach I feel very comfortable hunting alone.

Like many others, more than half of my hunting is alone. I’ve had some great hunts with buddies, but most of the best times have been alone.

I have a few guys I’ll happily go with, and once in a while try a new hunting partner. It’s just so nice and simple to go alone tho. Go where you want, when you’re ready, the way you want.

I hunt alone 60-70% of the time. It is just tough to coordinate peoples schedules as others have mentioned. I enjoy hunting with friends and by myself both can provide steller experiences. These days with the technology such as satellite messengers, and sat phones you will be relatively safe unless you have a completely incapacitating injury. Get out and enjoy hunting it wont be around forever.

At least 50 days a year. It’s nice to hunt with buddies, but I really enjoy hunting alone. You can do what you want, when you want, and your success is directly linked to your own actions. You don’t have to make compromises on how you want to hunt.

I enjoy sharing camp with friends and splitting off to hunt alone. Wouldn't miss a hunt if no one else could go.

I have elk hunted with a partner, with a group and alone.....Alone is the way to go for me. I will say, if you havent spent anytime alone before, camping or hiking.....go do so for 2 nights about an hour or two away from your home.......5 nights alone in the middle of a wilderness area isnt for everyone.....

turkey hunting- prefer to hunt with my Father....he's getting closer to 70, so anytime I can hunt with him, I do so.

Usually hunt alone for big game, although, I would prefer to have someone with me.

I usually dont hunt waterfowl alone, unless its out of a field but never if it involves water. Too many close calls even with people there to want to do it alone.

I am really pumped that someone posted about this. I have been searching here and podcasts for more guidance and advice with this topic. I used to hunt with my dad and uncle but gradually moved away from that as they only like to road hunt and were not successful. I had a falling out with my dad, partially because of my drive to do more, and we no longer talk. I have gone with three buddies hunting. Each one has a different personality and I enjoy hunting with all three of them but I will say, I always end up butting heads with each one of them. One of them doesn't listen to my advice and tells everyone where we hunt (new hunter) , one of them doesn't like to go to the next ridge, one of them doesn't pack for the hunt (he forgot game bags, didn't have a frame, or FOOD). All are great to go with but I have been drawn to hunt solo. This year I have made it a goal to go solo. I don't get any time off work this year so weekends is all I get and I think solo will be the only way I can make that happen and will feel good about not sharing where I kill something. Does anyone go solo in griz country? The grizzly's are moving around the State and it won't be long before they are in every mountain range. I struggle with hunting these areas solo.
