Which Smartphone

My smartphone is ancient. Battery life is really starting to suck and I use it for numerous things while hunting - not the best combination.

Looking at new phones, it seems like the days of a "free phone" on black friday are long gone by. In the "deals" I see, they want around $500 for a phone. Really hard for me to pay that for a dumb phone.

Any better ideas?

Thanks!

I've had the Motorola Moto g6 for a while, was $200 I think and has worked very well. Now there's the g and g7 which are lower cost driod options. Might be worth a look.

I second this. I also had the Moto G6 for almost 3 years before I replaced it with a Moto G8 Power. I'm really liking the 5,000 mAh battery.

You'll probably notice a huge improvement with just about any phone that has been released in the last couple years. I just upgraded an old (~ 5-7 yr old) HTC to a Samsung S10+. While might be a bit more expensive than your budget, it has 1 TB of storage, long battery life, charges ridiculously fast, retains the headphone jack, and has IP68 water resistance. Like you, I was trying to minimize cost and I don't need 20 cameras, did quite a bit of research and landed on the S10+.

My parameters were:
- cost
- battery life
- storage (internal and/or with SD card)
- headphone jack (good for headphones or connecting to an older car stereo)
- water resistance

Had to replace my iPhone 4 last year because it couldn't do updates and some of the apps stopped working and the battery was expanding. I about shit myself when I looked at the prices of phones. I got the 4 when they would still do the 2 year contract get the phone for 200 bucks. I went the used route and picked up an iPhone 7 for 250 bucks.
