Garmin 62s. Been a great piece of equipment. Never had a problem losing signal. Lasts about 3 days with continuous use before needing new batteries. Get an OnXMaps chip for it, and your set! I tried the birds view prepaid program, I thought it was very difficult to use and really bad imagery. Just a heads up on that incase you were looking at that program.

I have a 60csx on constantly when I'm in the mountains. I also have a 62s too which I love for birdseye imagery however it eats up batteries. I also use lithium batteries too. If I kept it on non stop I'm not sure how long it would last. (yes I'm carrying 2 GPS's when i'm in the moutains)

+1 for GAIA on an Iphone or an Ipad with gps chipset.

You can "upgrade" to GAIA PRO for a year or even a month at a time and really add to the program with ability to layer maps (which can be saved and used later even if you only bought the PRO for a month as I do). I use GAIA year round. If your getting a cell signal, you will also be able to layer in weather even in the base app.

I then add ONXMaps for western states to be able to ensure public land locations and boundaries. That is primarily what I use it for, and still use GAIA as the "base" map for general use.
