Where to start on planning for Alaska

So wanting to start planning for a trip to the last frontier, shooting for 2018. Dont have specifics nailed down or anything but thinking of caribou unguided with a 4 man team. For the guys that have done this hunt where did you start your planning on travel and what should i expect cost wise of a hunt like this per person? just looking for a broad outline of some of your processes of planning. Get the regulations and start reading them front to back,, this will be of great benefit. First as a non res, you will be limited on where you can hunt over the counter,, so that will drive the train. The draw is coming up for next year, so you have time to try to draw some better area tags. Plan 3 to 5K, much depends on what you do and if you get bush planes involved. Most decent transporters book up about this time for next season. Kotz has gotten iffy with the Feds closing down the hunting.

Never book with a transporter that has a predetermined location for your hunt as caribou are very unpredictable in their movement/migration.

I give Stid a call he was very helpful during my planning. 4 to 5 thousands is pretty accurate. Airfare to Alaska and a bush flight will be over 3000. Read my one for Alaskan Bob to see our adventure.

Timing.

My favorite time to hunt caribou is about September first as the trophy quality is improving and the meat is still good......and bugs are freezing out.

I would first decide you are willing to spend and add 10% to that.

Get an Alaskan Airlines credit card abd start racking up points. I flew round trip to Alaska for free this year.

A small group trip with half experienced and half newbies to AK might be enjoyable guys. Count me in. Caribou, moose, brown bear, have bow-will travel. Even have a couple pack rafts if ya wanna do a float trip. AK is a daunting challenge for someone who has never hunted there and let's face it, not all outfitters are created equal. I would feel far more comfortable going with guys who know first hand.
