The new Fenix HM55-R Renegade is pretty slick. Beats my Peax out in every category with the exception of red light throw. The Fenix still has a very bright and usable red light but its more of a flood than a spot.

I was looking at that version recently. But I have ultralight nitecores that do what I need and are a third of the weight and a third of the price. So it’s hard for me to justify right now. Maybe if my needs change and I need more output or longer battery life I’ll pony up

Been using the Princeton Tec Sync for 10+ years and it's adequate for the backcountry. The high beam isn't very bright, so I only hesitate in cliffy terrain or grizz country. Its relatively cheap, simple operation, light weight and reliable.

For all of us on a tight budgets, I picked up a pack of Infinity X1- 1500 this winter. I bought them for my garage and they were ~$30 for a 3-pack. I haven't taken it out into the field yet, but I have no hesitation to at this point. They have a red light, lockable, and 1500 lumens on the spot-high mode. I haven't put their battery to the test yet, so the jury is out.

If anyone has in-the-field experience with them, let me know before the fall rolls around.

Those are the ones from Costco right? I have those at home. Those are my around the house ones that I don’t mind if the kids get a hold of. For me, they are too bulky and heavy to justify carrying in the back country. But have a lot of features. I have them now so I won’t get rid of them, but if I were looking on a budget again I’d target the Sofirn deals they constantly have. Much better headlamp in general.

Fenix makes a really small lightweight rechargeable headlamp, the HM50R. I bought a spare battery, but the light lasted from 7pm until 3am, with juice to spare. 8 hours minimum, in a small lightweight package, with white and red illumination.

Been using a Fenix HL50 for a long time. Been great and being able to use either CR123 or AA batteries means I can poach batteries from my Garmin eTrex GPS if I need to.

Been using a Petzl Actik Core for years. Lots of trail running, winter chores, and hunting. Still working fine. The strap is a little stretched out. It would be nice to replace it.

Just picked up a Fenix HM62-T on sale over Memorial Day. Going to give that a shot. The features for the price look good on paper.

Same. But there are other ways to reduce the risk of draining it accidentally. Honestly, I've just been wrapping the headband around the light and it hasn't turned on inadvertently on me yet (living in the hip belt of my K4).

Hard to beat the older nitecore nu25 with dyi headband other than I wish they were usb-c.
