What's your app strategy when you have hunts already booked?

Do you "shoot the moon" when you don't really have time for an extra hunt? I always apply NM because with the odds, I figure I will just have to make room if lightening strikes. Thinking about WY and just shoot for the fences, do you think that's a good plan, or just get the point? Already doing archery antelope in Aug, so no conflicts on time.

Shooting the moon gets good men divorced. lol

The first question is how much time from work can you take? And the second question is what are you going to do if the tags you draw overlap? Lots of states hold you to the dates and you cannot return the tag.

I do not personally shoot for the moon. I work for a living and people depend on me there. Everything must be scheduled. I cant just up and go like I used to.

I don’t have as much experience applying as most people on here but I tend to shoot the moon in New Mexico. If my .83% hits I’m plan on just figuring out how to make it work.
Did the same thing last year for antelope in Wyoming. I just plan on hunting my second choice and researc accordingly. I had less than a 1% chance of drawing my first choice unit in the random draw.

I say go for it. The best thing that can happen is you get super lucky and drawn a awesome hunt. The worst thing is you get a point.

I don't shoot for the moon, my fall is usually well planned out and BUSY with other hunts so both time and money are tight. If I didn't have a packed schedule though, then yes, I'd shoot away!

I think it totally depends no how much time you have or how much time you can make. If you are to strike gold and draw a lottery tag can you take the time off to adequately go hunt? If yes, shoot for the moon. If no, points only.

Shooting for the money aka applying for NR sheep draws aka a generous NR donation to local wildlife conservation

I cringe when I calculate how much I spend each year on stupid sheep NR sheep draws lol.

Ok
I do the exact same thing. I'm going to burn 14 elk points this year and hunt it for all my PTO. If I draw NM too I might just have to quit my job. Ha.

I also have my fall already planned out this year but still continue to put in for other states that have harder draws. This year i plan on hunting Idaho archery and will push buying that OTC tag until early summer which means i should know my results in New Mexico, Utah, and Montana draws before that date Incase i need to make adjustments to my plans. The only other state i buy points in is Colorado but I’m not going to think about hunting there this year.

Yes, fill in with as many I top tier low draw percentage tags as I can apply for in the date ranges i have between it the hunts i already have planned. If one comes out I find a way to make it work.
