What's wrong with 270 WSM?

There’s kind of a glut of new cartridges in that middle area between the 6.5, 7mm and of course the old and new 270’s, so it’s hard to keep up with every one. I love a 270 of any kind, but the 270 win has taken a back seat with many guys and takeoff barrels are dirt cheap at times - like $30/each cheap so I’ve developed a lifetime supply of those. 6.8 western would be nice, but so would a 270 Wby, and of course the 270 WSM. To be honest I’ve probably stuck with the Win version for old time sake.

Hornady will reintroduce the exact same WSM as the 270 PRC and every kid will want one under the tree this Christmas. Lol

Love mine, and ammo is becoming more available. Probably need to stock up because I think its a dying cartridge with all the designer cartridges out now. When I run out, which should be never, I'll re-barrel to a PRC.

The 270 WSM recently got some love from ADG. They just did a run of brass. For the handloader it’s a solid choice. I load mine with 124 grain Hammer Hunters and it’s a lazer beam.
If you aren’t a hand loader and are stuck with factory ammo I believe there are much better options for you.

Hunted with a 270 wsm for many years. It was a custom long action build 1:8 26” barrel, shot the 170 eol bergers at 3050. Killed everything from antelope to moose with that bullet out to 800 yards. Currently building a 6.5 prc to replace it, mainly to be able to spot shots at closer ranges. Also to have some readily available factory options should the situation come up.
If your a hand loader, and get one with a fast twist, its a fantastic cartridge hindered only by limited bullet options.

For point and shoot, MPBR type hunting it is great. From a ballistic nerd standpoint, bullet options are its downfall but also mag length and barrel twist prevents people from using the higher bc options in factory rifles. 6.5 and 7mm are close to same bullet weights and have better options.

As has been said many times before, bullets matter more than headstamps. On either side of it (6.5mm and 7mm) there are superior projectiles and numerous case size options, both larger and smaller. With those being constants, .277 is always a concessionary choice.

Sucks walking into a store and only seeing regular 270 win. Kind of a pain to order offline. About the only issue with the WSM I’ve found. Killed a pile of animals with mine.
