What would you have done?

Wouldn't have done a thing different. Primary objective was to save the dog from harm, not kill the coyote.

Yes, that was my driving consideration. I can’t say for certain that the coyote would have attacked the puppy, but I wasn’t going to take that chance. If Connie had been closer, I wouldn’t have been as concerned for the puppy (Connie is half Grand Pyrenees and half bird dog. She would absolutely destroy a coyote). The sad stories of people who actually had dogs attacked by coyotes have made me feel better about stepping from hunting mode to defense of others mode.

Yep I’m shooting. Even if it doesn’t kill your dog just the long term affects to a puppies thinking . They get attacked you could have a dog aggression to deal with.

I'm joining in with the rest, I'm shooting (at) the coyote 8 days a week, especially if my dog is with me.

I'd take the same shot you did, I'm not going to let the coyote go on the offense, when I could go on the offense and take care of a potential bad situation before it presents itself. Whether the coyote would attack your puppy or not, no one knows, however based on the coyotes posture, it was looking at lunch IMO.

Sounds like a fluid situation you handled well, no need to second guess yourself.
A result of a dead yote is a distant second, compared to the primary goal of protecting the pup, mission accomplished!
Things could've gone quite differently had you waited, the yote may have bolted for the pup, no guarantees on making a running shot, then it would be too close to the pup to shoot, it could have been a foot race to get there.
Now it's time to put together a yote hunt.

I consider myself a Dog Snob. Not many breeds I DO NOT know. I come from a background of Drahthaars and Chesapeakes. Although I do tend to overworry of my dogs.....over years I have come to relax a little and more understand what dogs truly are and want.

My only critique is you missed a training opportunity! Sounds like a very capable dog. You may have creased or cut hair that a human wouldn't see.

In the dog world it's said over and over "Trust the dog".

Would have been a great opportunity to get your dog jazzed up and excited and put the dog on the crime scene. See what would happen. How the dog would respond. And what your dog's DNA really has in it.

I've literally shot truck loads of coyotes in my lifetime. They educate REALLY quickly.

Now is the best time biologically and ethically to thin them. Breeding season.

From the east coast....hate the east coast....never going back. But THAT is a great looking chunk of land.

Buy a $20 mouth blown predator call. Just sit down and try to blow the reeds out of it at sunrise at least once. And make sure your magazine is topped off. Will work only one time.

Im surprised everyone is saying shoot when there is houses/buildings in the background.

Oh, I got both dogs on the spot. The puppy dragged me 250 yards along the trail before the big dog caught up and ran the trail up into the woods. Once the big dog ran the trail about 400 yards total, I called off the pursuit.

Thanks. It’s my favorite place in the world. I head back down there next week and have some more opportunities planned. I’ll try the call at some point. I expect that when calving starts in a few days that will generate a carcass or two. I’ve got some “spots that should feel safe, but aren’t” planned as disposal sites.

Not in line with the coyote. The coyote’s backstop was two different hills.
Your choice, shooting through a tree you even say you think your bullet deflected, also say wouldnt take that shot at a deer.
Houses in background populated area I personally wouldnt take that shot.

You saw the same pic as everyone else. No houses near the line of fire.
