What would you have done?

Wouldn't have done a thing different. Primary objective was to save the dog from harm, not kill the coyote.

Yes, that was my driving consideration. I can’t say for certain that the coyote would have attacked the puppy, but I wasn’t going to take that chance. If Connie had been closer, I wouldn’t have been as concerned for the puppy (Connie is half Grand Pyrenees and half bird dog. She would absolutely destroy a coyote). The sad stories of people who actually had dogs attacked by coyotes have made me feel better about stepping from hunting mode to defense of others mode.

Yep I’m shooting. Even if it doesn’t kill your dog just the long term affects to a puppies thinking . They get attacked you could have a dog aggression to deal with.

I'm joining in with the rest, I'm shooting (at) the coyote 8 days a week, especially if my dog is with me.

I'd take the same shot you did, I'm not going to let the coyote go on the offense, when I could go on the offense and take care of a potential bad situation before it presents itself. Whether the coyote would attack your puppy or not, no one knows, however based on the coyotes posture, it was looking at lunch IMO.

Yeah, no reason to over think it. You did what you could with how it was presented to you. I would have done the same.

Sounds like a fluid situation you handled well, no need to second guess yourself.
A result of a dead yote is a distant second, compared to the primary goal of protecting the pup, mission accomplished!
Things could've gone quite differently had you waited, the yote may have bolted for the pup, no guarantees on making a running shot, then it would be too close to the pup to shoot, it could have been a foot race to get there.
Now it's time to put together a yote hunt.
