I’ve got a Savage LA in .270 Win and I want to rebarrel it with a proof or carbon six pre fit what other calibers could I convert it to get the most long range accuracy out of the gun?
Really wanted to go for a 6.5 prc but don’t have the magnum bolt face for it

I do t reload so something that has good factory ammo available

Savages have replaceable bolt heads. NSS is your place for savage parts. While it's not listed on their page, I'd call them up and see if they have one available. I'd be willing to bet they do. They can get you another barrel whether that's a take-off or an aftermarket barrel, a wrench, and a new nut. Don't forget your headspace gauges too.

Long range is subjective, but if you're talking say 600+ you'll need something with high BC bullets and medium to high velocity. Without a magnum bolt face, and limited to factory ammo, you may consider the 22CM, 6CM, 25CM, 6.5CM, 7mm-08, and .280AI. All of these offer factory ammo with bullets with G1 BCs in the mid .5s and higher. The 25CM with the 134 ELDM and the 6.5CM with 140+ grain bullets can both reach way out there, but you'll want to stick with longer barrels (24-26") to maximize MV. The 7mm-08 and 280AI with the factory 162ELDX are great choices as well, but you will suffer a recoil penalty compared to the Creeds.

If I get a new bolt face would I be able to build this gun to the new 7mm backcountry?

Your current bolt head will work for 7 BC. The 7 BC is essentially a 280AI case (the dimensions are very similar) made out of that special case material Federal rolled out.

Anything but 7 BC. It’s a Fad cartridge with no way of reloading and too many concerning issues. With no real performance gains. Stay on your path. The 6.5 prc will we an awesome upgrade.

Its a trash cartridge that has shown to be inaccurate & is already losing support

re-barrel to 30-06 if you want cheap factory ammo availability. But if money isn’t a factor, go 280 Rem. Or 280 AI. On Midway USA, there are twelve options for regular 280 REM vs six available for 280 AI.

Good luck

280AI is where I would go.

Or you could rebarrel your 270 with a fast twist, use a proper reamer to properly throat the chamber and use higher BC bullets.

Ok I’m pretty much off the idea of 7 BC
Leaning towards 6.5 prc
What twist rate and barrel length would you guys go ?
Wanting good accuracy 600 yds plus but light weight packable rifle that my kid could shoot deer with as well ?

What does “light weight” mean to you? And are you using a suppressor? If so, which one?

If it was me, I would want a rifle with a 1:8” twist. If you use a suppressor, plan on no more than 26” for combined barrel + suppressor. And I like a rifle to be right about 10# with scope, sling, suppressor, and any other permanently attached accessories.

I’ve got a silencer co omega 36 that I put on all my rifles out the door weight I’ve not given a ton of thought to but definitely would love to be 10# or less.

I assume that’s about 6-7 inches long and about 12 ounces, depending on the exact model and configuration. And I think the manufacturer recommends a minimum of a 20” barrel for cartridges that approximate a 6.5 PRC. But you know better than I do exactly which configuration you have. I recommend asking SilencerCo what minimum barrel length they recommend for 6.5 PRC and go with that length.
