I have always had a soft spot for shorthairs... but I have a DD now, and he is waaaaay more comfortable in the MT winter than my shorthairs ever were - especially when any water work is involved. I like any dog doing its job, but I doubt I'll ever be without a DD again.

"Slippers!" 🙂

Like a couple others, we have had DD’s for almost 20 years. Great family dogs, protective of the kids, and will hunt harder than me. Can beat them up one day and they’re always ready to get it on the next day.
I don’t do as much upland as I used to but they’re great blood trackers and learn VERY quickly.
Lots and lots of great breeds out there. They all have one common problem....... they don’t live long enough!

best ,
Rick

As someone commented above about skunks, I think he's finally learning they are bad news. He's been sprayed twice while out on the trail, though not a direct hit either time. The last time we came across one he stood back 20 feet and barked instead of running after it so I'm hopeful he's learned his lesson on those.

Okay, I clearly have more work to do here and have to rescind my hopeful comment from a few days ago. I never saw the skunk on my trail run this morning but by the way my dog smells, he found one and took a full on blast...

Here's my bad arse bluetick relaxing in the sun sitting at the kitchen table. This tough sob survived chained up outside for three months Michigan winter without food or water before we adopted him. He couldn't even get in his dog house anymore because of the deep snow. He was 35 pounds when animal control got him. Now he's 70 pounds and just about the best dog we've ever had.

Another vote for German Shorthair Pointers. They cover a lot of game scarce country I hunt. I love their personality after I got used to them. Then one day my wife said "Bill why do you want to have such an anxious, rambunctious, energetic dog! Aren't our children enough?". I said "No, the more the merrier!!".

German shorthaired pointers have always been around my family for our pheasant hunts. Love the range of personalities you can get out of the breed, funny that they all still love to hunt. We've had smart ones, dumb ones, shy ones, friendly ones, stubborn ones, and obedient ones. Love that when they get older all of them just enjoy being by your side and getting a scratch behind the ears.

We just got a 18 month old pup who looks to have pretty good potential. She is always running into our older girl and pushing her out of the way. But it's good to have the age difference to provide a bit of mentorship. Sad to see the lead dog get older, but she still gets after it! Resized_20191116_141852.jpeg

I would vote for gsp for most hunting in the Midwest. I had a cocker spaniel that did great and listened well but when I bought a gsp, she was twice the hunter he ever was. She does great with doves now but won’t touch water if it involves swimming. Now I have a 11 month gsp and she will swim through ice but working on grabbing birds. Im already on the hot seat for getting banned. I am the owner of a German bred and tested dog. Our system is very strict and hardness tests are not for the faint of heart. But dafug does the above BS prove? That your dogs will bark and bay a coyote in a trap? That's pretty Dahmer-ish. Shoot the fuggin thing or hit it with a bat. Pretty much the same as busting the antlers off a live buck.

I had a Malamute that hated skunks. After the first one sprayed him he took it personally. If he smelled one he would track it down and kill it. I saw him do it one day, he looked like a tweaker fighting through getting sprayed by mace. Really sucked cause his fur hung on to that smell for the better part of a year.
